Senator Davis: Abortion Law Is ‘Break With Texas Families’

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The state senator who became a national sensation for staging a marathon filibuster is calling sweeping new restrictions on abortion “a clear break with Texas families.”

Democrat Wendy Davis of Fort Worth filibustered for 11-plus hours last month and helped derail an omnibus abortion bill set to pass the Legislature.

Governor Rick Perry called lawmakers back to finish the job, though, and he signed the measure into law Thursday.

In a statement, Davis said Perry and Republicans who support the limits “have now taken sides and chosen narrow partisan special interests over mothers, daughters, sisters.”

Davis went on to say that legislators who voted for House Bill 2 have compromised the well-being of Texas residents because of “politics and personal ambitions.”

The law requires abortion clinic doctors to have hospital admitting privileges and restricts abortions to surgical centers. It also dictates when abortion-inducing drugs can be taken and bans abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.
