DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Talk about taking off. That’s how dozens of 7th and 8th girls describe their interest in engineering following SMU’s Engineering Camp in Dallas.

The middle schoolers say the two-day intensive camp has revealed a whole new world to them.

On day one, they designed and built their own rockets, learning the science and math behind it. On day two, they fired them off.

Lyle School of Engineering’s Greg Needel says it’s his job to inspire students to see the fun side of his favorite subject–especially girls, who notoriously shy away from science and math careers.

“We need more people who are innovators, and that’s what I help breed here,” explained Greg Needel, the director of SMU’s Innovation Gymnasium at Lyle. “Who wouldn’t not have a blast seeing something they built yesterday get thrown 250 feet in the air!”

“I like engineering, and it’s really fun for me,” said 12-year-old Maya Kirkland. “I feel it’s something I could succeed at.”

SMU’s Engineering Camp is sold out for the rest of this summer.
