DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles led a few thousand teachers Tuesday in the traditional beginning of the school year “convocation”. While in the spotlight, Miles also answered a question about his professional future.
Tuesday’s event was the kickoff for a new season and the chief of Dallas schools had something to make clear. The Dallas ISD quarterback this year is a returning starter… him. “I’m here, and I’m here to stay,” Miles said.
With an estimated 2,000 Dallas ISD teachers filling Skyline High School’s gymnasium, Miles became messenger, motivator and even an aisle dancing moonwalker.
The speeches and performances were all meant to ignite focus and direction for the educators the superintendent oversees, and diffuse speculation that he may be out. “We’re going to stay the course,” Miles said determined.
More than 1,000 new teachers and dozens of new school principals are part of Miles’ transformation plan for the district. But battles with veteran DISD educators and elected board members, turmoil over leadership style, including a current investigation, defined Miles’ first year as superintendent.
Teachers at the event Tuesday offered their assessment of the DISD road ahead. “There are a lot of changes,” teacher Sherry Rowe said, but admitted, “Some of it’s scary, and some of it’s best for our students.”
Another teacher, Brad Ruffin, said, “You need some stability, and you won’t get that with two and three years of changing. We’re going in the right direction, its not going to happen overnight, but we’ll get there. I truly believe that.”
Year number two of the Miles Era officially begins next Monday. But, as one educator said, Tuesday’s pep rally to inspire teachers looked more like a showcase for a superintendent trying to regain leadership credibility.
