State Fair Of Texas Fried Food Veteran Among Award Finalists
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – When you think State Fair of Texas you probably think fried foods. It’s a highlight for many fair fans. This year there are some new treats fighting to be named the best.
It’s one of the biggest contests of the year, the Big Tex CHOICE Awards. The eight finalists were announced Tuesday. Among them, Deep Fried Cuban Role, Deep Fried Thanksgiving dinner, Texas Fried Fireball. Abel Gonzales is a finalist with his creation, Awesome Deep Fried Nutella, but this isn’t his first walk down the Midway.
Gonzales has been a finalist for the past nine years. You may remember some of his previous creations, Fried Butter, Fried Cookie Dough, Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly, Fried Coke and last year’s, Fried Jambalaya.
Gonzales told CBS 11 News this year’s dish has been a work in progress. “I started off with a completely different deal, Nutella wasn’t even in the radar.”
As for his secret, “It has to be something that grabs the public’s attention something that on the midway people are saying I’ve got to try that. You become part of the attraction, you become part of the fun that in itself is not hard what’s really difficult is to make that something that’s eye catching and taste really good and that’s our goal every year to make it taste really good.”
Gonzales has won five out of the past nine years. The winner will be announced on Labor Day, September 2nd.
