DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – From eight fried finalists, two dishes have won top honors in this year’s Big Tex Choice Awards.
For BEST TASTE, the deep fried Cuban roll, is the 2013 winner. It’s a filling of slow cooked pork shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and secret sauce which is spread onto a slice of Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough, and deep fried. Roll is served with a side sauce for dipping.
Everybody loves our Cuban sandwich at the fair so we took everything that everyone loves in that Cuban sandwich, the roasted pork, the ham, Swiss cheese, pickles rolled it up into a pastry, deep fried it and you get an explosion of flavor coming out it’s awesome,” said Issac Rousso, creator of the dish. This is his fourth year to make it to the finals in the competition and his first win. His earlier entries include the deep fried pop tart, deep fried salsa, and deep fried pork ring.
Now as the winner of this year’s Big Tex Choice Best Taste Award, comes the pressure of preparing thousands and thousands in time for the first day of the fair, which is September 27th.
“We’re going to start making them today,” said Rousso.
You can get the deep fried Cuban roll at one of two locations: the Magnolia Beer Gardens and at the Taste of Cuba at Cotton Bowl Plaza.
For MOST CREATIVE, the fried Thanksgiving dinner is this year’s champion. It’s mama’s homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey rolled into a ball, dipped in southern cream corn, rolled in seasoned corn meal and then fried to a crispy golden brown. The dish is served with old fashion giblet brown gravy and a zesty orange cranberry dipping sauce. This is Justin and Rudy Martinez’s second win. Their first, fried bubblegum.
