Full “Harvest Moon” Over DFW

By Chief Meteorologist Larry Mowry

Check out the bright full moon tonight over North Texas!  This is the “Harvest Moon”.

Why is it called the “Harvest Moon“?  Before electricity, farmers would be harvesting their crops this time of year and the moon provided extra light into the evening hours to help prolong the time available for harvesting crops and getting them to market.

The moon will rise in DFW at 6:54pm.

The moon reaches its full phase at 6:13am Thursday morning.

The moon will set shortly there after at 6:19am.

If you look on your calendars at home the full moon may show up tomorrow.  That is because technically the full moon does fall tomorrow morning at 6:13am.  But the moon will be fullest tonight compared to tomorrow night but only be a very small percentage.
