FORT WORTH (AP) - Fort Worth school officials are hoping to replace an elementary built underground in 1970 to avoid noise from a nearby airport.

Students at Washington Heights Elementary will be moving above ground if voters approve Proposition 1 of a three-part bond proposal Nov. 5. Replacing the underground school is part of the estimated $490 million Fort Worth school bond program.

The school was renovated and placed underground in 1970 after parents and teachers said airliners taking off from nearby Meacham Airport made learning difficult.

Superintendent Walter Dansby tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the plan is to have the new school on the same site.

Dansby says airplane noise is no longer a concern because flight paths in the area were changed in the 1970s. Also, newer schools are better soundproofed.
