DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – At this moment, Brandan Wright seems more concerned about chuckling about his new beard than he does about worrying about the MRI on his shoulder. But all yuks aside, the Mavs know there is an injury history there that requires investigation, caution, and yes, concern.

Dallas Mavericks big man Brandan Wright has a new contract, 15 additional pounds of muscle, a sprouting beard that he’s quite proud of … And a problem.

Wright underwent an MRI on Thursday morning to determine the severity of an injury to his left shoulder. In my brief visits with Wright and with Mavs GM Donnie Nelson at the “Mavs Masters” corporate golf outing at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, neither man expressed deep worry about the issue.

But history says Wright — who this summer signed a two-year, $10 million deal to remain to Dallas — needs to be monitored carefully here.

Wright, the eighth overall pick in the 2007 Draft by the Warriors, missed the entire 2009-10 season after undergoing surgery on a labrum tear of that left shoulder. The 6-10 center/forward has missed 119 games managing his shoulder and any damage to the labrum would be particularly limiting.

The Mavs will hope this issue — sustained Tuesday in practice — is unrelated to the labrum problem.
