DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dozens of visitors to the Dallas Zoo witnessed two male lions kill a lioness Sunday.

It happened at the Savannah Exhibit of the park.

Zoo officials said the two male lions, named Denari and Kamaia, had lived with the female, Johari, for three years. There were previous incidents of “rough play” between the big cats, according to a spokesperson for the zoo, but nothing such as Sunday’s violent attack.

Despite one of the male lions biting Johari on the throat, and the other one going in for the kill, many witnesses said they didn’t realize what was happening.

It wasn’t until Johari was visibly limp; unmoving underneath one of the bigger males, that people said they knew something was wrong.

The zoo has taken Denari and Kamaia out of the public exhibit for now.
