FORT WORTH (AP) - A North Texas police officer accused of sexually assaulting a prostitute, official oppression and theft has been fired.

Fort Worth police Chief Jeffrey Halstead in October announced charges against Officer Douglas Campbell, who was put on leave. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Civil Service documents obtained Monday show Campbell was indefinitely suspended Dec. 23.

Defense attorney Jim Lane says Campbell, who has appealed his firing, denies the charges.

Campbell was arrested in September on a charge of theft by a public servant after allegedly taking $2 from a vehicle in a police sting. Campbell was later charged with official oppression-sexual harassment and sexual assault by a public servant. Police say Campbell threatened to arrest a prostitute if she didn’t have sex with him.

Campbell’s free on bail pending trial.
