NORTH DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The suburbs north of Dallas are dotted with the headquarters for many of the country’s most familiar companies.

The business environment there has helped workers in the area earn the highest median salary in the state.

But a study by the American Association of University Women found – within Texas – it also has one of greatest disparities in pay between men and women. Researchers discovered women working full-time in the Plano, Allen and McKinney area make about 20,000 dollars less a year than men (or $.71 cents for every dollar men do.)

Researchers also found the biggest disparity among groups that tend to earn higher salaries, Caucasians, Asians, and the highly educated.

Plano ISD teacher Janice Cordray said, “In sales, I saw it a lot. It was… unequal pay depending on the company. And so I would always go back and renegotiate and I usually got my way.”

Cordray now teaches students her negotiation skills. She advises them to research companies in advance. “Provide valid data to the employer proving not only that you’re worthy of it, but that you deserve that pay,” she said. “Once women learn, they tend to be better negotiators, once they learn the skill. And they’re fabulous at it.”

The AAUW researchers didn’t speculate on the cause for disparity, but explanations have varied from biased employers to differences in people’s life choices.

But advocates for change have argued, the only way to know… is to get people talking… about a somewhat prickly subject.
