ROCKWALL (AP) – A 22-year-old man was given a 30-year prison term after his conviction on a murder charge in the hit-and-run death of a Northeast Texas police officer last year.

The Texarkana Gazette reports the jury sentenced Justin Miles Sanders after five hours of deliberation Wednesday in Rockwall. Sanders was convicted of murder on Monday in Texarkana, Texas, police Officer Jason Sprague’s death.

The 30-year-old officer was headed to a Texarkana park to check reports of fighting and drug use in June and had just emerged from his car when Sanders’ car hit him as he fled a possible marijuana arrest. Sprague died the next day of severe brain trauma, multiple fractures and other injuries.

The trial moved 150 miles west from Texarkana to Rockwall to escape potentially prejudicial publicity.
