Fort Worth Neighborhood Angry After Flooding
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – The rain on Tuesday afternoon came too fast and too hard across a large part of Fort Worth. The area was under a Flash Flood Warning for a couple of hours and, when the water started to go down, the damage became very apparent.
Residents along Western Avenue, in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of south Fort Worth, have already started cleaning up the debris. Most of the block was flooded on Tuesday, with water going inside of at least three homes. City officials are now inspecting the aftermath.
Todd Brown said that he and others waded into the water and pushed several drivers out of harm’s way, including a mail carrier.
Some homeowners are very unhappy with the city. They said that a storm water utility fund was established almost a decade ago, with promises that work would be completed two years ago. This area has flooded before, but never like what was seen on Tuesday. Homeowners are upset that it is taking so long to find a solution.
“Countless meetings,” recalled Brown, “and we got nothing. It’s very frustrating, because it’s June and it’s going to rain some more, and in July it rains even more. As you can tell, this can just happen again.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t have a storm water system in place — based on the old infrastructure in this neighborhood — that’s working,” explained Fort Worth City Council member Dennis Shingleton. “Because of that, we have these quick torrential downpours and it causes damage.” One of the possible solutions, Shingleton said, is to buy out some of the homeowners, so that the city can work on the storm water system underground.
But the homeowners love their neighborhood, and are reluctant to leave. Some decisions will have to be made, Shingleton said, and made soon.
