NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – An Arlington golf course is taking it upon itself to tackle the water problems that have accompanied the North Texas drought.
The decision was made to drill for water at Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. The course, opened in 1924, is the oldest in Arlington.
In these days of drought and water restrictions, drilling for water is 21st century gold.
“Right now we pay a pretty penny for our water,” explained Brick Scott, Meadowbrook Golf Course Superintendent. “What that [drilling] will allow me to do is allow me to put more water down.”
Crews are drilling down to an aquifer — about 850 feet.
The water will be pumped into a holding pond and then a pump station will draw the water into the courses irrigation system.
Ultimately, the endeavor will save the city as much as $30,000.
“Right now we are in stage one water restrictions here in Tarrant County,” Scott said. “ Right now, outside of greens and T’s we are watering the golf course two times a week.”
The well won’t just help the golf course, but also those living outside the course.
The city will end up saving up to 15 million gallons of water a year and that’s enough water to supply 123 homes for a year.
“We’ve got all the problems with the drought and shrinking water supply. So, I think it’s a great idea,” golfer Chuck Lytle said. “It’s great.”
The city has hit water on this course, but what about oil? “I don’t think there’s any of that around here, but hey who knows,” Scott said laughing.
The City of Arlington has done the same thing at the Chester W. Ditto Golf Course.
A spokesperson with the City of Fort Worth said it has recently drilled at Meadowbrook Park, but has no plans for any other drilling.
McKinney has one municipal golf course that uses well water.
