DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – Crews are busy trying to fix-up the Green Spot convenience store in Dallas’ White Rock Lake area after the city’s latest ATM smash and grab.
Loyal customers like Amber Rhodes are alarmed. “It’s crazy, I can’t believe that happens in our neighborhood. I’m blown away honestly, I didn’t know people did that.”
Police say since January 1st, thieves have stolen or attempted to steal ATM’s in Dallas 29 times.
They’ve made off with the machines 11 times including Wednesday morning.
Since the beginning of the year, detectives have arrested a total of four suspects for ATM related crimes.
Lt. Reuben Ramirez of the Dallas Police Department says they’re tracking the criminals. “The past experience we’ve had it’s always centered around a core group of suspects.”
In Wednesday morning’s case, police say the suspects crashed a stolen truck into the store to get to the ATM.
Police credit a witness who saw everything and called 911 right away.
That helped police catch two of the suspects after leading officers on a short chase.
Detectives are still searching for one of the suspects.
Lt. Ramirez says they’re now trying to figure out if the latest incident is connected to the others this year. “Whether they’re responsible for multiple offenses recently, we’re still investigating that.”
Green Spot’s owner says he hopes to re-open Thursday morning.
Amber Rhodes says, “They’re hurting the small business and they’re hurting our community as a result and that really makes me angry.”
