CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) – The former bookkeeper of First Baptist Church of Carrollton was charged with theft after using church funds for personal purchases that totaled more than $279,000 in five years.

Police said Jill Martin took out business credit cards in her name without church authorization.

Martin turned herself in to Carrollton police August 24 and was transferred to Dallas County jail August 25.

Police said the case was under investigation since February when the suspicious financial activity was first reported by church leaders.

Martin was the bookkeeper for the church from 2007 to January 2016.
