HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say they are working to determine if any evidence in a property room freezer was contaminated after a sprinkler malfunctioned, causing water damage to some cardboard boxes and envelopes that contained evidence.

Acting Police Chief Martha Montalvo says the sprinkler malfunctioned Tuesday afternoon and the incident was confined to a “relatively small area in the property room freezer.”

Officials say property room evidence technicians are working closely with the Houston Forensic Science Center to ensure evidence is handled properly and to repackage all items that were affected.

Montalvo says most of the evidence is contained in Ziploc bags or plastic containers placed inside boxes or envelopes for storage.

The forensic science center has contacted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office about the incident.
