Voter Error Blamed For Problems With Machines

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A now viral Facebook post with nearly 200,000 shares claims an Arlington woman attempted to vote straight Republican ticket, then realized the machine showed she was voting for Hillary Clinton.

And other North Texans have warned of the same issue, using social media to tell people. Even some Tarrant County Democratic leaders said they have received similar reports.

“We’ve had multiple examples of that coming in. They voted for Secretary Clinton, it jumped to Trump, so we’re working with the elections office,” said the party’s chair, Deborah Peoples.

Tarrant County Republican Party Chair Tim O’Hare said he has seen the reports before, but that the problem is voters are incorrectly turning the machine’s wheel to change the page, and in doing so, are changing their vote.

“The Facebook post has taken on a life of its own. We don’t think there’s fraud inside the machine or software glitches,” said O’Hare.

Tarrant County Elections Administrator Frank Phillips said this isn’t the first time people have complained.

“From time to time Tarrant County Elections receives these complaints. Tarrant County takes these complaints very seriously,” he said.

After investigating, Phillips determined the problem was voter error.

“Further, in each incident where we could actually speak to a voter, they tell us that they discovered the changed vote on the summary screen display. This shows that the machine is working exactly as it should. The voter gets to review a summary of vote changes made and make any changes as needed before actually casting the vote.”

Also Tuesday, Tarrant County Democrats issued a news release accusing Republicans of intimidation at a polling place.

“It’s a problem I believe from our Republican friends who are trying to intimidate voters. We had a voter who called in and said there were Republicans standing within the 100 foot marker, which is not allowed, disparaging Democratic candidates,” said Peoples, who believes the Tarrant County elections administrator is investigating.

But O’Hare rejects accusations his party is intimidating anyone.

“Instead of issuing press releases that Republicans are intimidating voters, they need to go in and politely ask the election judge to draw the line and make sure people aren’t going inside the line and violating election code.”

So, there are a lack of clear instructions, and turning the wheel defaults to Clinton.

It’s perfectly clear. If you make a mistake, it’s a Clinton vote.

    Shameful.

  2. VADM says:

Any voter registrar that knowingly allows rigged voting machines should receive the gallows, nothing less.

  3. Javier Silva says:

Funny how in the first paragraph it says: a woman voted a straight republican ticket then realized the machine showed she was voting for Hillary Clinton, but then turned into this:

Also Tuesday, Tarrant County Democrats issued a news release accusing Republicans of intimidation at a polling place.

    And this:

    From CBS no doubt.

  4. LOL – nothing new folks, … on Super Tuesday, BOTH bill and hillary clinton WENT INTO at least three voting places in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.. shaking hands with poll workers, schmoozing with voters, with huge motorcades (like that is not intimidation).
hillary has ALREADY done it once this week in NC.

  5. Bruce Gregory says:

With the dirty tricks revelations of late, I wouldn’t put it past the D’s to have one of their own dress in a Trump shirt and hat and cause trouble.

  6. Bryan says:

“The machines are working as they should” b/c people can accidentally vote for NRC” perfect logic.

  7. With Tarrant county already under investigation by the State of Texas for voter fraud in the elections of State Rep. Ramon Romero Jr. (D–Fort Worth) and Fort Worth Mayor Pro Tem, Sal Espino, is anyone surprised?

  8. Rick says:

How on earth does turning a page wrong change a vote??? And how many ways are there to turn a page? Stupid software design. Purposeful? If one votes straight Dem ticket, do any votes change to Republican??????

    1. Lou says:

      Exactly the right question!!!!

  9. flyfisher111 says:

A young relative tried to vote a straight Republican ticket in Houston today, but the machine would not register a vote for Trump despite repeated attempts. Her brother, at an adjacent machine, had no problem. This being her first time voting, she was afraid to make a scene.

  10. Wayasti Adovdo says:

URGENT: If you suspect any kind of voter fraud, call the Trump Ballot Security hotline @ 1-855-245-4634. Let’s nip this thing in the bud. Get mad, stay mad, and vote for Donald J. Trump!

  11. Lib Serum says:

Oh, GOOD! It’s all cleared up. Typical lib answer – “It’s the stupid voter!”

  12. Peter Anastos says:

No doubt Hillary and DemocRATS will try to steal this election through fraud, intimidation and Republican voter suppression. Hillary = Death. She is the most corrupt, lying, crooked politician to EVER dare run for president. If she steals this election, there will be massive resistance, and a Civil War. I will NOT recognize her “presidency.”

  13. Moi Ettu says:

So this is what gaslighting looks like. Thanks for the example, CBS.

  14. Belleboy says:

Taking into account where this story has been reported I don’t give it any credence. I heard this woman and another state their case and I certainly accept their credibility over any other fictional story.

  15. The only thing the election official could say is that is happening to democrat voters also. Well, the only ones reporting this are republicans.

Simple solution. Go to paper ballots. I never use these machines. In Houston, Texas some years past an entire warehouse full of machines burnt to the ground. They were involved with voter fraud, being held as evidence. The democrat party skated on this one.

  16. OldOllie says:

Voting machines should be outlawed…PERIOD! All voting should be done on paper ballots with indelible liquid ink so as to create a permanent and unalterable record of the votes.

This also speeds up the voting. Slowpokes can take an hour to decide, but they’re not preventing anyone else from voting because they’re just sitting at a table in a school gym or lunchroom with a ballot and a Sharpie. If you make a mistake, you take your spoiled ballot to the official who shreds it and gives you a new one.

Ballots can be counted by optical scanners as soon as they’re completed, and the results can be sent to the county via the Internet as soon as the polls close. Recounts can be done by machine or by hand.

This is how I’ve voted for years, and I’ve never had to wait in line more than 2 minutes for them to check my ID against the registration rolls, and hand me a ballot. Also, we’ve NEVER had an issue of changing votes like we keep hearing about with these damned machines, or had any disputes over hanging chads.

  17. John Campbell says:

If this site allows links, here’s a video of it actually happening and being repeated. 11 seconds long

Now ask yourself, why is it the only people this seems to be happening to are those voting Republican? Clearly the video shows a perfect button strike for the Republican vote, but the vote is registered for the Democrat. TWICE! The vote is cleared and then the event is repeated.

Funny how you don’t see this happening for those voting for the Democrat. So if this is a mis-calibration, how is it it only happens to mis-calibrate in favor of the Democrat?

    1. John Campbell says:

In the interest of full disclosure, this appears to be from the 2014 midterms. Since this same event seems to be happening again, how is it this wasn’t stopped and fixed before this election? Does your touch screen on your cell phone require re-calibration every time you use it?

  18. Jan says:

The cure for this is to turn out in record numbers.

  19. Barbara A Sherrill says:

    VOTERS … Take Note!

The most common reports in Texas are that if you vote straight ticket (R) it appear to do so … EXCEPT Hillary Clinton is checked for POTUS.

DO NOT select “straight party” ….. go down the ballot and select each candidate individually and then go back and check all votes and RE-CHECK before hitting “cast ballot” …. OR … request a paper ballot. It is reported that Chambers Co. has already shut down the e-voting and switched to all paper ballots.

Also, if you experience any voting irregularities in Texas report them to:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office
    Main Agency Switchboard(512) 463-2100

    Gov. Greg Abbott’s office
    Information and Referral Hotline
    (800) 843-5789

Also contact your local FBI office and ask for the Public Corruption Unit to report voter fraud.

  20. janinec4 says:

    Sounds rigged to me!

  21. THESE MACHINES MUST BE PULLED! It is NOT VOTER ERROR. We know these are SOROS machines. Older people and those with impaired vision may not notice the changes to their vote.

    THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS LYING!

  22. President Obama said; ” The Democrats are in charge of the voting machines in almost all precincts, so I am not worried.” Ahhhh….errrrr……I bet the Republicans and Independents are!

  23. dakareedog says:

How is it possible to “turn the wheel wrong” so it changes your vote?

  24. S. Ghans says:

Using the wheel to turn the page automatically changes the vote from Trump to Clinton, not the other way around.

How many votes have been changed? Tens of thousands already?

  25. PWF says:

I voted yesterday in Cooke County on a paper ballot, but the only writing utensils provided were #2 pencils. I thought it was a little strange, but went ahead and voted. In years past, I have only been provided a pen and never a pencil. Is this a reason to suspect potential fraud? It is a strongly Republican county, so if I voted Democratic, can it be changed to reflect Republican? The obvious answer is “YES”.

    1. Zeke4445 says:

It’s the corrupted establishment pushing the criminally-corrupt Democrat candidate that is the concern. But thanks for your ham-handed attempt at obfuscation. We never get enough liberal hypocrisy.

  26. Zeke4445 says:

Oh, it’s “voter error” that causes machines to cast ballots for Democrats when the voter punches in “straight Republican.” NOW I get it.

It’s “voter error” that causes it to switch a “Trump” vote to a “Clinton.”

Are you sure it’s not the Aurora Borealis? Perhaps it’s those bouts of “global warming” causing the machines to “overheat.”

Nah, it must be those “stupid voters.” You see, the rigged machines know what’s best for us.

  27. Chadfree says:

So, when you find the machine making this mistake, you correct it. But does the mistaken vote get counted as well? Pretty slick.
