FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - One of the city’s oldest pools is reopening this summer after budget cuts kept it closed for two years.

All municipal pools in Fort Worth have been closed since 2009, but last year the city council unveiled a plan to reopen the Marine Park Pool after demands from residents.

“It was just a reminder of a resource that could have been used to the benefit the local youth,” said Carlos Flores, a member of the Northside Neighborhood Association who helped to push for the pool to reopen. “I, myself, growing up in that area, learned how to swim in that pool.  So it does have a connection to me and a lot of the local residents there.”

The 86-year-old pool was in disrepair, but fixes to plumbing and pipes and other infrastructure repairs came in under the $150,000 budget.

As city employees prepared for the grand re-opening, the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Worth nearby was also preparing for summer at the pool.

“When they saw the water fill up about two weeks ago, they were really, really, excited and were very anxious to get back in the pool and get back over there and start swimming over there,” said Arica Prado, the branch director of the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Worth.

The pool’s closure had a big impact on the Club, which serves hundreds of children over the summer.

“When it closed down it forced us to try to look for other ways for them to get their exercise and water activities in,” said Prado.

The pool is expected to get a lot of use this summer, but it’s only a quick fix.

Next year, the children will have a better pool to swim in. With $3.9 million in grants and revenue from gas leases, the city hopes to open a new state-of-the-art aquatic center at Marine Park.

The old pool will be filled in and covered with a pavilion.

The city hopes to open the new aquatic center in May of 2013.

Until then, the Marine Park Pool will open Saturday, May 26 at noon.

Adults pay $3 and children pay $2.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – “Men in Black 3” hits theaters this weekend, 15 years after the first movie and 10 years after MIB 2.

The gang is all back together but don’t expect to see Frank the Talking Pug in this one. You’ll notice some references to him but for some reason he is otherwise absent. Bummer.

This time Will Smith’s Agent J travels back in time to rescue a young Agent K, played by Josh Brolin doing his absolute BEST Tommy Lee Jones impression.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – He is one of the world’s premiere composers and conductors and we are proud in North Texas to call Marvin Hamlisch our Dallas Symphony Pops Conductor!  He’s won 3 Oscars, 4 Grammys, 4 Emmys, a Tony and 3 Golden Globe awards but he says he is happiest just being on stage performing and entertaining.

For the past 2 years Mr. Hamlisch has brought the best of Broadway, Hollywood and beyond to the Morton Meyerson Symphony Hallas conducting various themed concerts. Friday and Saturday nights he celebrates our military with a special Armed Forces Salute just in time for the Memorial Day holiday.

Hamlisch will conduct the orchestra in some traditional patriotic tunes like God Bless America and She’s a Grand Old Flag but reminds us there are lots of very rousing and great American songs that are patriotic as well as the classics.  There will be a full choir on stage and at the end of the concert, Hamlisch will ask members of the military to stand as he finishes the evening off with special tribute songs to the Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard.  He says he hopes one day to perform these songs for our men and women who serve when all are home safe and we are not at war.

Mr. Hamlisch will return in two weeks for 2 evenings with Michael Feinstein as they perform the best of Cole Porter, Friday 6/8 and Saturday 6/9 at the Meyerson.

Next year he returns as our Pops Conductor for the 2012-2013 DSO Pops season with tributes to the Wicked Divas and Frank Sinatra.  He is thrilled to be a part of the North Texas arts community and is impressed with our commitment and patronage. Fingers crossed Mr. Hamlisch will return year after year!

DALLAS (AP) - The Boy Scouts of America is trying to recruit a new generation of kids to join its troops with high-energy, high-tech activities that include thrill-inducing zip lines at a new adventure camp, apps and a television show.

Wayne Brock, one of two new Boy Scout leaders named this week, told The Associated Press that the organization founded in 1910 has refocused on reaching children whose attention is increasingly pulled in a myriad of different directions by a host of alternate activities.

The Boy Scouts’ membership peaked in 1972 at almost 5 million. Last year, they had about 2.7 million youth members, down slightly from about 2.8 million in 2007. Brock said the group has been working hard in the past five years to draw in new members, and he will continue that effort.

“We have a saying — ‘the main thing.’ When we say ‘the main thing’ we’re talking about providing a quality Scouting experience to an ever-increasing number of youth,” he said. “So our challenge is to continue to remain a relevant and exciting program for the young people.”

An Eagle Scout who has worked for the Boy Scouts for 40 years, Brock noted there was a time when leaders thought Scouts should leave their cellphones behind when they headed out on hikes. Now, though, the thought is why not bring them along?

“What difference does it make whether you stop and identify a plant … by opening up a book or do you bring up an app on a phone?” Brock asked. The school of thought has changed so much there’s now an app for The Boy Scout Handbook.

Brock, who was named chief Scout executive, the top professional in the Texas-based organization, and Wayne Perry, who was named the group’s national president, the top volunteer leader, also touted a new camp set to open next year in West Virginia’s New River Gorge region.

When it opens, the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, located on more than 10,000 acres of forested mountains, will be the home of the national Scout jamboree.

“The goal is to make it extremely exciting. Make it safe, but make it perceived to be dangerous. We have some zip lines there that I guarantee you no adult will go on. And some climbing walls that are very safe but I think a lot of adults are going to say `you first,”‘ said Perry, co-owner of the Seattle Mariners and chief executive officer of Shotgun Creek Investments.

Another goal is to inspire Scout leaders to make similar additions to camps back home. The key to building membership, Perry said, is “break through all of the fog that kids face today on things that occupy their time and get them engaged.”

“When the world is such that the average young person spends an inordinate amount of time in front of a video game, what we represent is a change from that,” Perry said. “Once we get them, they say, ‘Hey this is fun.’ Is it a great challenge to get them engaged? Yes. Do we have any trouble once we get them? No.”

Michael Jargowsky, of Sea Isle City, N.J., who has been a Scoutmaster for 14 years, said he thinks the Boy Scouts have done a good job of evolving. Jargowsky noted a Boy Scout camp that has traditional activities like hiking and learning how to start a campfire now also offers such things as digital photography and robotics.

“If we do want to keep these kids — although they love the physical stuff — we also have to marry in the Internet with it and that’s what the Scouts are really starting to do well I think,” Jargowsky said.

Scott Armstrong in Syracuse, N.Y., an Eagle Scout who is den leader for a Cub Scout pack that includes his 10-year-old twin boys, said they recently went star-gazing with telescopes and used apps on iPads provided by the local council to identify constellations.

“While Scouting still embraces all the traditions and all the excitement of outdoors, it’s definitely taken a good hard look at making Scouting relevant in 2012 and beyond,” Armstrong said. “There was a lot less competition for kids’ attentions and parents’ dollars and time when I was a kid. Now we’re seeing local soccer programs that start at 18 months. There’s a lot to compete with.”

Brock said the Boy Scouts also have introduced all-terrain vehicles and personal watercraft activities, and they’re participating in a television show called “Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?” set to premiere in the fall on the National Geographic Channel.

One thing is unlikely to change: Brock and Perry said they have no plans to revisit the Scouts’ policy of not allowing gays, a stance that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000. The policy got attention again this spring after a den mother who is a lesbian was ousted in Ohio.

“We understand that no single policy is going to accommodate all of the diverse views of our country. We really appreciate differences of opinion,” Perry said.

Brock and Perry along with National Commissioner Tico Perez, the top volunteer in charge of program quality, make up the group’s highest level of leadership.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - She has had a dream of singing, dancing and acting on stage ever since she was a tiny girl. Sixth generation Texan Julie Johnson remembers sitting inside the massive Music Hall at Fair Park when she was just 3 years old. Carol Burnett was starring on stage in “Calamity Jane” and Julie said that she recalls thinking, “That’s what I want to do someday.”

Flash forward to current day and Julie is doing just that! The talented actor has appeared in many productions in North Texas, New York City and around the country, but this month her childhood dream came true as she took to the stage to star in the Dallas Summer Musical’s current show “Memphis,” currently at the Music Hall.

She told me that she actually teared up in the cast’s first rehearsal. They were confused as to why she seemed sad, but she said that they were tears of joy when she remembered that little girl sitting mesmerized in the big theater so many years ago. And now she was front and center on the big stage that had inspired her. Dreams do come true!

Johnson is also well-known and loved for her famous voice work! She is the sweet, girly voice of Baby Bop — the little green dinosaur on the popular “Barney” TV series. The show spawned such teen stars as native Texans Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, and Julie said that he is very proud of her work on the long-running series that has entertained millions of children around the world for over a decade.

“Memphis” continues at the Music Hall at Fair Park through Sunday, May 27.

Deep-fry it.

Christi Erpillo’s family has served deep-fried items at the Dallas fair for 40 years. She says the Samoa is her all-time favorite cookie and she’s found a way to drop the classic into a deep fryer without getting it soggy and without losing its taste.

She tells The Dallas Morning News the Samoa embellishment is intended to help the Girl Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary.

Erpillo’s mother introduced funnel cake to the fair in the 1980s. In 2009, Erpillo made a splash with deep-fried peaches and cream.

The three-week State Fair of Texas opens Sept. 28.

A new app launched this weekend that will scan the faces of patrons in 25 bars across the city to determine their ages and genders. Would-be customers can then check their smartphones for real-time updates on the crowd size, average age and men-to-women mix to decide whether the scene is to their liking.

The Austin, Texas-based makers of SceneTap say the app doesn’t identify specific individuals or save personal information. But in a city known for its love of both libations and civil liberties, a backlash erupted even before the first cameras were switched on from bar-goers who said they would boycott any venue with SceneTap installed.

SceneTap’s ability to guess how old people are and whether they’re men or women relies on advances in a field known as biometrics. A camera at the door snaps your picture, and software maps your features to a grid. By measuring distances such as the length between the nose and the eyes and the eyes and the ears, an algorithm matches your dimensions to a database of averages for age and gender.

SceneTap CEO Cole Harper says the app doesn’t invade patrons’ privacy because the only data it stores is their estimated ages and genders and the time they arrived — not their images or measurements.

“Nothing that we do is collecting personal information. It’s not recorded, it’s not streamed, it’s not individualized,” Harper said.

Whether the company’s promises are comforting or SceneTap still seems creepy, it portends a near future when any camera-equipped smartphone will have the ability to recognize faces with a click of the virtual shutter.

Already the iPhone’s camera app will highlight a person’s face on the screen with a green box before the picture is even snapped. And Apple’s iPhoto software will try to recognize the faces of the people in users’ pictures to categorize photos automatically by who’s in the shot.

Facebook also uses facial recognition software that tries to identify any friends in a photo a user uploads.

SceneTap’s San Francisco debut came the same day Facebook went public. Privacy experts say social media has played a major role in making it easier to attach a face to a name.

“Ten years ago if I walked down the street and took a picture of someone I didn’t know, there was little I could do to find out who that person was. Today it’s a very different story,” said Lee Tien, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who focuses on surveillance technology and privacy.

Tien says facial recognition technology has advanced to the point that having your picture taken potentially offers up the same degree of identifying information as giving someone your fingerprints. Computer programs can break down high-resolution images in minute detail to identify the distinctive features of individual faces.

Those patterns, rather than the images themselves, make possible the tracking of individuals even without knowing who they are. In theory, a program could also match that pattern to identifiable online images such as a Facebook profile picture.

The threat to privacy from an app like SceneTap depends not just on what’s being stored but how easily the system could be converted to become more intrusive, whether by a hacker or under a court order.

“Even if everything is happening the way it is supposed to, then the next question is, gee, is that good enough?” Tien said. “Is that something that you’re comfortable with?”

Along with the visual images being deleted nearly as soon as they’re snapped, SceneTap’s sensors aren’t sophisticated enough to recognize individual faces in any case, Harper said. Detecting basic characteristics like gender and age takes much less digital work than identifying individuals, he said.

The 28-year-old CEO argues SceneTap doesn’t come close to intruding on personal privacy the way many other ubiquitous technologies already do. Many bars already have video cameras that record customers’ every move, creating an archive that could, for example, be subpoenaed in court. And anyone who uses Facebook or Gmail is turning over reams of sensitive personal information to large companies every day.

SceneTap’s business plan also hinges on the data it collects. Facebook and Google make money by targeting individuals as precisely as possible. Harper says SceneTap only has the combined data on bar customers’ genders and ages. The company hopes advertisers will ultimately covet that data to target bar-goers through the app. The bars themselves can use the statistics to determine what mix of people come in when to adjust their inventories, advertising and promotions, Harper said.

SceneTap is already in use in six other cities across the country, including Chicago and several college towns.

Charles Hall, general manager of Bar None in San Francisco’s Marina District, said he decided to install SceneTap to give potential customers another way to interact with the business. He said his decision to use it depended on the company’s promise that no information was being collected on individuals.

“I have nothing to gain from doing something that people are going to be up in arms about,” Hall said the day before the official launch.

A few hours later, the bar briefly got cold feet because of the negative attention SceneTap had received in the local media. But as of 10 p.m. Friday night, Bar None was “lively,” according to the app: a little less than half full, a nearly even mix of sexes, average age 22.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The rebooted TV show ‘Dallas’ will debut on June 15, but before it even hits the screen there is already talk of it being renewed for another season.

City of Dallas officials want to make sure if that happens, the filming will continue in Big D.

The show rocked the TV world over 30 years ago; and now the revamped show is poised to return to primetime. Most of the original show was shot on sound stages in California, but this time the show is being filmed completely in and around Dallas.

With a price tag of more than $1 million an episode, there is a lot of money spent in North Texas, so it’s no surprise the Dallas City Council put on their best J.R. smile to do a deal to keep ‘Dallas’ in Dallas.

Members of the council’s economic committee welcomed show producer Ken Toplosky shortly after going into executive session to discuss possible financial incentives to keep the program in Dallas. “We can do this anywhere,” Toplosky told CBS 11, “states want us, so government stepping up and becoming a partner with us? That’s crucial.”

The city has already purchased a warehouse in South Dallas that serves as a sound stage.

There is infrastructure here as well as incentives. Word is the series is likely to be renewed, so to keep it here, city hall is willing to deal. “It’s about sweetening the pot,” says Janis Burkland of the Dallas Film Commission. “If you don’t have ‘Dallas’ here, how do you convince others to come here? It’s pure and simple.”

While other states have greater incentives, especially Louisiana, Texas has cut back on money for film commissions, so the Dallas Film Commission is working extra hard. Toplosky says he appreciates the effort. “Things that are impossible in other cities, we do here easily,” he says, “So, if there’s infrastructure, we maximize that; the more infrastructure you have the more companies will come here.”

The new show will have some old familiar faces. And some old familiar landmarks, as well as some new ones. It’s about image, but are there residual benefits to a community once a TV show is gone?

Near-downtown barbecue restaurant Hickory House thinks so, according to cook George Peoples. “Oh, man, it was wonderful, we had a nice time,” he says of his experience with the crew of the now-canceled series ‘The Good Guys.’ “They ate some of the barbecue and they were saying how great the barbecue really is,” according to Peoples. Store owner Nick Spiros says customers still come in to talk about it. “Something like that’s amazing; it makes the store look great.”

Toplosky insists filming Dallas in Dallas helps give a more authentic feel. “You have actors that love being here; they feel like they’re coming home,” he says of the original cast reprising their roles. “You get an excitement about the show. We feed off of that, people are excited we’re here, it makes us excited to be here.”

Details of incentives are being held close to the vest, but if money can be worked out, J.R. will be back. “We’re going to think out of the box and try to make sure we’ve got a good proposal on the page to make sure they stay here,” according to economics committee chair Tennell Atkins.

For his part, Toplosky is all positive about Dallas, the city. “We’re very excited to be here; for us it’s a dream come true to work on something iconic in a city that is iconic, and celebrate that.”

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – They have been America’s Sweethearts since 1972, when they first graced the field at Texas Stadium. Now the iconic cheerleading squad has picked their 2012 candidates to attend training camp. For the next month and a half candidates will compete to win a coveted spot on the official Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader roster!

Two weeks ago, hundreds turned out for the first day of the 3-day audition process. In all, 79 finalists, representing five countries and 19 states, were whittled down. This past weekend they took to the Cowboys Stadium field, to dance, kick and shake their poms.

Fourteen judges (I was honored to be a judge once again – this my 10th year!) deliberated long and hard, as competition was especially tough this year. There were 25 veterans returning to try out, along with the super talented newbies.

In the end – a great group of 45 were chosen and thrilled to start the training camp process.

For the past seven years, as a part of their top rated reality show Making the Team, CMT has been on board filming the entire audition process. Each year the show consisted of just eight episodes but this year – due to popular demand – they will film 13 weeks of segments.

Apparently, producers know the world watches not only America’s Team but the Sweethearts as well!

Also making Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders news this week – Men in Black 3 opens and the stars, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, invited all the top American cities to donate an item, representing their state, to be placed in a time capsule that will be sent to Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

CBS 11 decided DCC poms would be a perfect choice, so three of the cheerleaders donated poms and they were sent to Hollywood for official placement inside the time capsule. Both stars of the movie loved the bright and shiny poms, but Will Smith did mention it was hard to hold them as he is a proud native Philadelphian and his Eagle Pride hurt just a little with all that silver and blue!

Movie executives promise the capsule will not be opened for 43 years!

The new 2012 DCC squad will debut on the field in August at the first pre-season home game and Men in Black 3 opens this week citywide.

It’s all a win/win in my book!

Dalian Wanda Group Co.’s purchase reflects the global ambitions of a wave of cash-rich Chinese companies that are using acquisitions to speed their expansion by obtaining foreign skills and brand names.

Wanda said the deal will create the world’s biggest movie theater operator. The Beijing-based company said it will invest an additional $500 million to fund AMC’s development. AMC operates 346 cinemas, mostly in the United States and Canada, and says it has 23 of the 50 highest-grossing U.S. outlets.

There are 10 AMC movie theaters across the DFW area including those at the NorthPark Center, Grapevine Mills Mall and The Parks at Arlington.

“We support AMC becoming bigger, not only in the United States but in the global market,” said Wanda chairman Wang Jianlin at a signing ceremony for the acquisition.

The deal reflects rising Chinese investment in U.S. corporate assets despite disputes between the two governments over trade and political issues such as this month’s diplomatic standoff over a blind Chinese legal activist. It is the largest-ever takeover of a U.S. company by a Chinese company.

In terms of all Chinese corporate investments in the U.S., the deal is the third largest, according to financial research firm Dealogic. It ranks behind investments by Beijing’s sovereign wealth fund, the China Investment Corp., of $5 billion for a minority stake in Morgan Stanley and $3 billion in Blackstone Group LP, both in 2007.

Chinese companies had invested $34.8 billion in the United States by the end of 2011 in industries including auto parts, agriculture and steelmaking, according to data compiled by economist Derek Scissors at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

Globally, outbound mergers and acquisitions by Chinese companies total $16.8 billion so far this year, up 6 percent from the same period last year, according to Dealogic.

Wanda said AMC’s headquarters will remain in the Kansas City area and day-to-day operations will not change. It said AMC’s management would remain in place and staff numbers were not expected to affected. The company employs some 18,500 people.

Wanda, founded in 1988 and privately owned, operates hotels, department stores, tourism and other businesses and says it had 2011 revenue of $16.7 billion. The company employs 50,000 people and its assets include 86 theaters in China.

AMC’s owners include Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, the Carlyle Group, CCMP Capital Advisors and Spectrum Equity Investors.

AMC has reported losses for the past three years but its CEO, Gerry Lopez, said it has returned to profit this year due to strong ticket sales.

Wang, the Wanda chairman, said AMC’s financial problems were due to the cost of servicing high debt. He said conditions should improve once an injection of Wanda’s cash allows it to pay off some of that.

“We are confident that after the merger, AMC will turn positive,” he said. “We have absolute confidence in the future of the company.”

Wanda’s investment will allow AMC to speed up renovation of some cinemas and install more 3-D and IMAX technology, Lopez said.

Wang and Lopez said the two companies plan to share experience in the film business and will have executives from each country visit the other. Lopez said they have not made detailed plans about such things as a possible exchange of staff.

Lopez is to join the board of directors of Wanda’s cinema unit, while a Wanda executive will join AMC’s board, Wang said.

Wang said Wanda is considering more acquisitions abroad for its entertainment, hotel and retail units. He said it might try to buy into a global hotel brand or a hotel management company but gave no details.

“We want to be a big company, not just in China but in the world,” he said.

LONDON (AP) - With his carefully tended hair, tight trousers and perfect harmonies, Robin Gibb, along with his brothers Maurice and Barry, defined the disco era. As part of the Bee Gees — short for the Brothers Gibb — they created dance floor classics like “Stayin Alive,” ”Jive Talkin’,” and “Night Fever” that can still get crowds onto a dance floor.

The catchy songs, with their falsetto vocals and relentless beat, are familiar pop culture mainstays. There are more than 6,000 cover versions of the Bee Gees hits, and they are still heard on dance floors and at wedding receptions, birthday parties, and other festive occasions.

Robin Gibb, 62, died Sunday “following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery,” his family announced in a statement released by Gibb’s representative Doug Wright.

Gibb was the second disco-era star to die this week. Donna Summer — who earned the Queen of Disco title by singing “Last Dance” and “I Feel Love” — died of cancer in Florida on Thursday.

The Bee Gees, born in England but raised in Australia, began their career in the musically rich 1960s but it was their soundtrack for the 1977 movie “Saturday Night Fever” that sealed their success. The album’s signature sound — some called it “blue-eyed soul” — remains instantly recognizable more than 40 years after its release.

The album remains a turning point in popular music history, ending the hard rock era and ushering in a time when dance music ruled supreme. It became one of the fastest-selling albums of all time with its innovative fusion of harmony and pulsing beats. The movie launched the career of a young John Travolta whose snake-hipped moves to the sounds of “You Should Be Dancing” established his reputation as a dancer and forever linked his image to that of the Bee Gees.

Recording Academy president Neil Portnow predicted that fans will dance to “Stayin’ Alive” and other songs Bee Gees songs for generations to come.

“Robin has had an indelible impact on music,” he said.

Despite financial success, Robin Gibb and his brothers endured repeated tragedies. Maurice died suddenly of intestinal and cardiac problems in 2003. Their younger brother Andy Gibb, who also enjoyed considerable chart success as a solo artist, had died in 1988 just after turning 30. He suffered from an inflamed heart muscle attributed to a severe viral infection.

Robin Gibb himself took care of his health and, at the time of his death, was a vegan who did not drink alcohol.

Gibb was for decades a familiar figure on the pop stage, starting out in the 1960s when the Bee Gees were seen as talented Beatles copycats. They sounded so much like the Beatles at first that there were strong rumors that the Bee Gees’ singles were really the Beatles performing under another name.

Many late-’60s bands were quickly forgotten, but the Bee Gees transformed themselves into an enduring A-List powerhouse with the almost unbelievable, and certainly unexpected, success of the song “Stayin’ Alive” and others from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack that accompanied the movie.

With this second wind, the Bee Gees sold more than 200 million records and had a long string of successful singles, making their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Saturday Night Fever” — actually a compilation album featuring the Bee Gees but including songs by other performers — represented the pinnacle of Gibb’s career, but he enjoyed more than 40 years of prominence as a Bee Gee, as a solo artist, and as a songwriter and producer for other artists.

The Bee Gees consisted of Barry Gibb, the eldest, and twins Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Their three-part harmonies became their musical signature, particularly in the disco phase, when Barry’s matchless falsetto often dominated, and they were renowned for their wide-ranging songwriting and producing skills.

The Gibbs were born in England on the Isle of Man, an island in the Irish Sea, but moved to Australia with their parents in 1958 when they were still quite young and began their musical career there. They had been born into a musical family, with a father who was a drummer and bandleader and a mother who liked to sing.

After several hits in Australia, their career started to really take off when they returned to England in 1967 and linked up with promoter Robert Stigwood.

After several hits and successful albums, Robin Gibb left the group in 1969 after a series of disagreements, some focusing on whether he or Barry should be lead vocalist. He released some successful solo material — most notably “Saved by the Bell” — before rejoining his brothers in 1970 and scoring a major hit with “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”

The Gibbs then suffered some slack years — searching for a style that could sustain them in the post-Beatles era — and Barry Gibb started experimenting with falsetto vocals, first on backup, and then in the lead position.

The brothers were at a low point when they went into a French studio to try to come up with some songs for the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack at the urging of Stigwood.

The success of those tunes — closely linked to the popularity of the movie, and the power of the disco movement — changed their lives forever, giving them a string of number one hits.

After several years of chart success, the Gibbs spent much of the 1980s writing songs and producing records for other artists, working closely with top talents such as Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Dolly Parton. They also continued touring and releasing their own records.

Gibb also released more solo albums, including “Secret Agent,” during this period.

The band continued in the 1990s, gaining recognition for their body of work with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Then came Maurice’s sudden death in 2003. The surviving brothers announced that the name Bee Gees would be retired with Maurice Gibb’s death, although Robin and Barry did collaborate on projects and Robin Gibb continued his solo career and extensive touring despite mounting health problems.

He had to cancel several engagements in 2011, including one with British Prime Minister David Cameron, and he showed an alarming weight loss on his rare public appearances. He was hospitalized briefly in 2011 with what doctors said was an inflamed colon and had surgery for intestinal problems in March, 2012.

One of his final projects was “The Titanic Requiem,” a classical work he co-wrote with his son RJ, that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra premiered in April to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Robin Gibb remained emotionally attached to the Isle of Man, keeping a house there as well as homes in rural Oxfordshire, England, and Miami.

He also became involved with numerous charities and worked to establish a permanent memorial to the veterans of Britain’s World War II Bomber Command and recorded songs honoring British veterans.

Gibb is survived by his second wife, Dwina, and four children, as well as his mother Barbara, his older brother, fellow Bee Gee Barry Gibb, and his sister Lesley Evans, who lives in Australia.

The network television business in America is very competitive on all fronts: competitive in the quest to attract advertisers to spend money and competitive in the quest for viewers. When I was growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, there were still only the three networks and a handful of local independent stations. No internet. No social media. No DirecTV or DISH. And cable was viewed more as a means to extend local television service in areas that could not pick up over the signals real well. Today in 2012, it’s all different. Convergence of various media platforms such as computers and iPhones. Hundreds of channels, programmed almost like radio stations. And consumption of media far different than from the 1960’s.

But there is one thing that hasn’t changed….and that’s being a big tent…….like the CBS Television Network……and it’s a great way to go! And one thing as a viewer is that you can get in for free!

This past Wednesday, CBS executives formally presented the 2012-2013 primetime programming lineup in New York City. CBS is very fortunate in that its schedule had very few weak spots. Not all networks are so lucky!  Of the 25 shows on the fall schedule filling 22 hours of prime time a week, CBS kept intact 21 out of 25 shows or an 84% renewal rate. 4 out of 25 shows received new time periods or 16%. And 4 out of 25 shows are new…again 16%. In a business as competitive as network television, you can’t get much more stable than that!

CBS prides itself on shows that have strong characters that Americans like and can look up to with superb writing and character development. Mark Harman of NCIS (Jethro Gibbs) is one of the most outstanding actors today and is a great example of an actor playing a character that Americans love, worship, and look up to.

The four new shows on the schedule this fall are: Partners (Mondays, 7:30pm), Vegas (Tuesdays, 9pm), Elementary (Thursdays 9pm), and Made In Jersey (Fridays 8pm). Shows that received new time periods were: 2 Broke Girls (Mondays 8pm), Two & A Half Men (Thursdays 7:30pm). CSI: New York (Fridays 7pm), and The Mentalist (Sundays 9pm).

Series that have completed their run on the network include Unforgettable, CSI: Miami, Rules Of Engagement, and A Gifted Man. But you will be able to see syndicated reruns of CSI: Miami this fall, late night Saturday and Sunday, on CBS11. Rules Of Engagement also premieres in syndication this fall on our sister station, TXA21.

“It’s going to sound sort of like heaven to people who are non-horn players. The more horns you have, the better it sounds,” said Dr. Bill Scharnberg, UNT Regent Professor of Music. “So when you get a thousand horn players, it’s going to sound perfect to the outside listener.”

Hundreds of French horn players are already on the University of North Texas campus for the “International Horn Symposium”. It’s a chance for them to learn from some of the best players in the world, including some that have a unique approach to the instrument that’s normally found in classical music.

“Probably the furthest person to travel is Arkady Shilkloper from Russia, who is a well-known jazz horn player,” Dr. Scharnberg said. “There are about a half-dozen horn players in the world that call themselves jazz horn players. Arkady’s probably the best known in the horn world. He’s very entertaining. He can play an hour by himself with just horn and foot pedals. He can play two horns at once, Alp horn and horn, it’s just amazing.”

He’s performing with the school’s world-famous One O’clock Lab Band on Friday, May 18.

On Saturday at 5:30pm, the players at the symposium will gather in the middle of campus for an attempt to set the new world record. Dr. Scharnberg hopes to attract some local musicians as well. “I hope to have maybe 500 to 1,000 Texas horn players here in addition to the 400 or 500 guests from around the world,” he said, “so we hope to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.” The current official record for the largest French horn ensemble is 85.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is loosely based on the pregnancy guide of the same name. It’s brings together several big-name stars like Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez and takes them through the process of becoming a parent, but it’s the newcomers who make the difference in this film.

Brooklyn Decker plays a supporting role as the Pregnancy Unicorn, the annoyingly perfect woman who makes having twins look easy. Decker also has a starring role in the other big release this weekend “Battleship,” where she plays Taylor Kitsch’s girlfriend.

Christie’s auction house says Thursday’s sale featured more than 150 items including English furniture, Russian art, silver and jewels.

The highlight of the sale was a pair of George II giltwood mirrors attributed to Mathias Lock. They were sold for over $464,000. They had been estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $250,000. The price includes the buyer’s premium.

Cliburn, born in Louisiana and raised in Texas, says in a news release that he collected some of the pieces to remind him of concerts in various cities around the world.

Cliburn, now 77, was 23 in 1958 when he became world famous by winning a piano competition in Moscow.

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The economy is set to be an important issue in this year’s presidential election. From ups and downs on Wall Street to global money meltdowns, everyone is focused on finances. But even those who are not old enough to vote are learning to manage their cash. “You can tell, by how the economy is going, how the future’s going to be,” explained Denton High School junior Alex Wright. “So, from my perspective, I like knowing about it.”

Juniors and seniors in Wright’s economics class are immersed in the issue. High school students are being taught the basics of economics, but some studies show that the internet generation may be able to better understand the topic by going online — specifically the world of online gaming. New games like “Beat the Market Online,” “World Game of Economics” and even “SimCity” are reaching children on a different level.

Some experts believe that these online games are a much more effective teaching tool. “Just going up and lecturing about these basic concepts is not going to do it,” said Dr. Steven Cobb with the UNT Center for Economic Education.

Cobb explained that this generation of students is more interested in money and the economy than previous ones. And with the internet being such a integral part of their everyday lives, learning about economics through online gaming feels natural. “It gives them a basic exposure to some really important economic concepts in an environment that doesn’t seem like school,” Cobb said.

“More kids, they don’t go home and study,” Wright explained. “They go home and play video games. So, if you made a video game out of it, I can see where more people would play it and learn better from playing it.”

It is a new method of teaching that, experts think, will yield benefits for a future generation of consumers. “We’re visual learners,” said Denton High School senior Carrie Pena. “We like video games and we like doing anything else but being in school.”

But Cobb also warned that a potential drawback to such video game learning is that the games do not provide an adequate debriefing opportunity, a process that allows students to make correct assessments about their economic decisions.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Aligned in a crescent shape spread wide across the Granada Theater stage Tuesday night, Spiritualized began and ended with startling blasts of noise.

Their two hour set was methodical and intoxicating. Much like their albums, Jason Pierce and his band come off as supremely confident in the sound they’re offering the listener.

This wasn’t a concert to revel in the joy of improvisation –– shoegaze noise squalls stopped on a dime, giving way to bare, hypnotic guitar riffs. Psychedelic visuals projected upon the band often mimicked the peaks and valleys of the music it accompanied.

There was very little room for errors.

In the more sparse moments, we could hear Pierce most. The man once known as J Spaceman was often absorbed in the full, engrossing sound he’s painstakingly created since the group’s 1992 debut. On record, his pained lyrics are crisp above the mix. Live, they were part of the whole.

On Tuesday, Pierce was backed by a keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, a drummer and a pair of backup singers who, at times, seemed to anchor their leader.

Early in the set, during “Lord, Let It Rain On Me,” Pierce was hunched over, wailing.  The song had morphed its spacey, gospel buildup into a rackety crescendo and while Pierce’s voice began to fracture, the singers offered a perfect contrast adding another sonic layer to the proceedings.  All the while keeping their dazed, doo-wop dancing in perfect step.

Spiritualized made time for a smattering of the band’s catalogue, even covering Spacemen 3 track “Walkin’ With Jesus.”

Midway through the concert, the sample at the beginning of “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” echoed through the room, triggering the biggest reaction of the night. The song had an intensely calming effect and was the beginning of a soothing three-song suite that included “Mary” and “Stay With Me.”

But Pierce wasn’t done –– he ended the set with a triumphant “Come Together,” only managing to top himself upon returning to the noise blast that welcomed us after “Cop Shoot Cop.”

And then the visuals stopped and Pierce stepped from behind his perch, offering us a final wave –– the audience got what they came for, and Spaceman knew it.

Just like he had all along.

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - CBS has officially announced its new fall TV schedule, picking up four new series and continuing a number of top-rated programs.

The network will finish the season as America’s most-watched network for the ninth time in the last 10 years.

The following shows will make their debut on the network in the fall: “Elementary,” a contemporary take on detective Sherlock Holmes in New York City, starring Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu; “Vegas,” a drama inspired by a real-life sheriff and his battle with a mobster in 1960s Las Vegas, starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis; “Made in Jersey,” starring Janet Montgomery as a smart first-year lawyer with a working-class background practicing at a prestigious New York City firm; and “Partners,” a comedy about two very different life-long best friends and business partners, starting David Krumholtz and Michael Urie.

The network also reshuffled some of its show times, creating a comedy night on Monday with with its new comedy “Partners” and “2 Broke Girls” sandwiched in between “How I Met Your Mother” and “Mike & Molly.” The still-popular “Two and a Half Men” moves to Thursday nights.

The items will be part of a Christie’s auction Thursday in New York City. They include a silver soup tureen from the collection of a daughter of Russian Czar Nicholas I.

Cliburn says he’s contemplated the sale for years, since moving belongings out of homes in two other states to his Fort Worth mansion.

Cliburn started collecting the furniture, paintings and jewelry after winning the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 at age 23. It was the height of the Cold War, and the lanky Texan quickly gained international fame.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Cliburn is keeping plenty of his treasures.

The company Mark Zuckerberg created as a Harvard student eight years ago is preparing for what looks to be the biggest Internet IPO ever. Expected later this week, Facebook’s Wall Street debut could value the company at $100 billion, making it worth more than Disney, Ford and Kraft Foods.

That’s testament to the impressive numbers Facebook has posted in its relatively brief history. More than 40 percent of American adults log in to the site —to share news, personal observations, photos and more— at least once a week. In all, some 900 million people around the world are users. Facebook’s revenue grew from $777 million in 2009 to $3.7 billion last year. And in the first quarter of 2012 it was more than $1 billion.

Just a third of those surveyed think the company’s expected value is appropriate, while 50 percent say it is too high. Those who invest in the stock market are more likely to see shares as overvalued, 58 percent said so. About 3 in 10 investors say the expected value of shares is fair. Facebook on Tuesday lifted the expected price for its shares to $34 to $38 apiece from $28 to $35 each.

But price worries won’t necessarily stop would-be investors. Half the people surveyed say they think Facebook is a good bet, while 31 percent do not. The rest aren’t sure. Americans who invest in stocks roughly agree, although investors who are more “active” — those who have changed their holdings in the past month —are more negative. Nearly 40 percent say Facebook would not be a good investment.

Young adults, a majority of whom log on to Facebook daily, are more willing to dance to their hoodie-wearing piper, 28-year-old CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Among Zuckerberg’s peers, adults under age 35, 59 percent say Facebook is a good bet. Compare that to the views of senior citizens: Only 39 percent age 65 and over say Facebook shares are a good investment. Nearly half of Gen X’ers (ages 35-44) say the company is a good bet, as do 55 percent of middle-aged people.

Those under 35 are the generation most interested in Facebook’s IPO because they’ve grown up immersed in the social network. They were the first users, logging in from their college dorm rooms. Later, Facebook expanded to allow high school-age and even younger students to sign up. It’s become an integral part of their lives, giving them a launching pad to spread the news of life’s major developments through posts and pictures.

Conversely, it’s the rare senior citizen on Facebook: Just 21 percent have an account. Half of baby boomers — the generation born in the years after World War II — have one. But most of the 56 percent of the country that’s on Facebook is young — two-thirds of Gen X’ers and a staggering 81 percent of people 18-35 use the social networking site.

Young people aren’t just connected. They are constantly tethered to smartphones, tablets and notebook computers. Even with the rise of alternative social networks like Twitter and Google Plus, 55 percent of Zuckerberg’s peers go on Facebook every day. A third log on several times a day. Despite the intensity of their use, a narrow majority of young adults predict Facebook’s appeal will fade down the road (51 percent), fewer think it will stick around as a service (44 percent).

The public overall is similarly divided on the company’s future. Just under half of adults (46 percent) predict a short timeline for Facebook, while 43 percent say it has staying power.

Young people are more aware of Zuckerberg and have more positive views of the CEO, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday. Overall, one in five Americans say they’ve never heard of him, 30 percent don’t have an opinion and 14 percent plain don’t like him. Only about a third have a good impression of the CEO, who has alienated some with Facebook’s ever-changing approach to user privacy.

But 46 percent of people under 35 like him. And a scant 4 percent of those younger adults say they’ve never heard of him.

The privacy issue is a stinger. Three of every five Facebook users say they have little or no faith that the company will protect their personal information. Only 13 percent trust Facebook to guard their data, and only 12 percent would feel safe making purchases through the site. Even Facebook’s most dedicated users are wary — half of those who use the site daily say they wouldn’t feel safe buying things on the network.

As for how Facebook makes most of its money —selling ads— 57 percent of users say they never click on them or on Facebook’s sponsored content. About another quarter say they rarely do.

Despite user discontent about privacy, Facebook and Zuckerberg have connected with many Americans. The survey suggests that his reputation and youth seem more like assets than liabilities. For those who have heard of the CEO, two-thirds are at least somewhat confident in his ability to run a large public company. Twenty-two percent doubt he can handle the leadership role. As for the social network he created, 51 percent of Americans clicked “Like.”

The Associated Press-CNBC Poll was conducted May 3-7, 2012 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,004 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - The Deion and Pilar Sanders divorce case gets another look on Tuesday morning by a judge at the Collin County Courthouse, with the Sanders children at the center of it all. The couple will ask the judge for a visitation schedule, allowing both parents to see their two sons and daughter.

The kids are currently split up between the parents — Deion has been granted temporary custody of the two sons while Pilar has the daughter. Both parents want to be able to visit with all three children, and that is what the Tuesday court hearing will address.

The divorce proceedings became headlines last month when police were called out to the couple’s home in Prosper, in order to help contain a violent altercation between Deion and Pilar. Last week, the judge ruled that Deion could stay in the home. Pilar must stay at least 500 yards away. But both sides maintain that the other committed assault. The judge found no evidence to support those assault claims.

A gag order was also lifted, permitting Deion and Pilar to talk publicly about their very contentious divorce. Deion made an appearance on the CBS daytime show “The Talk,” but he did not discuss the divorce. However, Pilar did speak openly with CBS 11 News. “I’ve never put my children up to filing reports on him,” she said, referring to an infamous tweet where Deion showed the world a photograph of his kids filing police reports related to the April altercation. “Who does that? Who tweets about their children supposedly witnessing anything, and trying to stand against a parent just so you can get an edge on a divorce proceedings, just so you can get an edge on finances? What man in the world does something like that?”

There will be a full custody hearing, but that has not been scheduled yet. Tuesday’s hearing will only address temporary visitation.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - “Survivor: One World” should have probably just been called “Survivor: Kim’s World.”

Kim Spradlin not only won the CBS reality competition’s $1 million grand prize on Sunday, the crafty 29-year-old bridal shop owner from San Antonio also brought the alliance that she helped form at the game’s outset to the final tribal council all while engineering the dismissal of each member of the show’s nine-person jury of former players.

“I strategized until I was blue in the face,” said Spradlin.

The jury ultimately voted for Spradlin over her allies, 33-year-old high school teacher Sabrina Thompson of New York and 26-year-old medical saleswoman Chelsea Meissner of Charleston, S.C. Spradlin, Meissner and Thompson worked together from the first day of the game, which originally featured two tribes divided by sex living on the same beach in Samoa.

“We were a mess at the beginning, and then we just pulled it together,” said Thompson, who nabbed two jury votes to Spradlin’s seven. Spradlin also received the most viewer votes, winning an additional $100,000 fan-favorite prize.

Spradlin secured her place among the final three contestants on the 24th edition of “Survivor” by winning four individual immunity challenges, including the final two physical competitions, which ousted 29-year-old career consultant Christina Cha of Los Angeles and 25-year-old special education teacher Alicia Rosa of Chicago from the 39-day contest.

At the end of the finale, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst announced that the upcoming 25th season would be titled “Survivor: Philippines” and would feature three tribes as well as three returning contestants that previously removed from the game for medical concerns.

Starting June 19, Amazon Kindle owners who also subscribe to the company’s Prime service will be able to check out the titles at no charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. According to Amazon, the titles can be borrowed as frequently as once a month, and unlike some other lending services that limit the number of e-books available, Amazon will have enough for anyone to access the books when they go live on the service.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have reached this agreement with Pottermore,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said today in a statement. “This is the kind of significant investment in the Kindle ecosystem that we’ll continue to make on behalf of Kindle owners.”
