J.D. Ryan was born in Fort Worth, Texas. Grew up in Dallas and graduated Richardson High School in 1975. J.D. always dreamed of becoming a pilot and he soloed a glider at the tender age of 14. J.D. went on to earn his Private Pilots license at the youngest possible age of 17. His love and passion for aviation was equaled by his desire to be a radio broadcaster.
While earning his degree in Aviation Technology at Central Missouri State University, J.D. landed a week night job on 1450 AM KOKO radio and he knew which road to follow.
Returning to Dallas Fort Worth after graduation in 1981, J.D. immediately got a radio job with Terry Dorsey on 99.5 KPLX. From there his broadcasting career would take him to top rated stations and shows for the next 30 years. The stations read like a “Who’s Who” in Dallas Fort Worth radio history…KEGL, KVIL, KSCS, KRLD-FM & KRLD-AM to mention a few.
In 1989 J.D. created, produced and hosted a top rated local TV show called “HOT TKTS” on Fox Television along with a friend of his, Russ Martin. It was a weekly look at the fun people and places of North Texas. J.D. also hosted a nationally syndicated television show called Billy Bob’s Country seen in U.S. cities from coast to coast & Europe.
J.D. & Russ would reunite in 2000 for a hugely successful afternoon drive Radio Talk Show with CBS Radio on 105.3 fm.
When CBS changed the format to sports in 2009, J.D. remained at CBS and moved to KRLD-AM to become their “Around Town” reporter.
“Around Town” has now expanded to “Texas Road Trippin’ “….a weekly look at the fun people, places and things to do in the Lone Star State! Texas Road Trippin’ is heard weekly on News Radio 1080 KRLD in Dallas, as well as stations along the Texas State Network.
