Brandi Fernandez was tapped to lead the District Attorney’s office on an interim basis after Mike McLelland’s assassination in March. But now that a new DA has stepped in full time, Ms. Fernandez has taken her leave.
Unnerved, but poised, Brandi Fernandez spoke lovingly about her former boss, Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia just days after they were murdered.
Fernandez says, “He and Cynthia were the mom and dad of the office. I still kind of expect him to walk through with a plate of cookies that she cooked us.”
The prosecutor who has replaced the district attorney murdered in North Texas says her staff is “unnerved” but will continue to adhere to their oath to serve the community.
Federal, state, and local investigators say they’re following up on all tips they received as they hunt for whoever killed Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, his wife Cynthia, and Assistant DA Mark Hasse.
The CBS 11 I-Team confirmed two attorneys have already thrown their names in the hat for the Kaufman DA vacancy.
