Alabama-Birmingham held SMU to the lowest scoring output ever in a Conference USA game, defeating the Mustangs 47-28 Wednesday night.
The statement says the new conference will likely include 18-24 schools, be split into divisions and not only have a football championship game, but also semifinal games.
During a stretch of the second half, SMU (10-9, 2-3) connected on only 2 of 18 shots to help Memphis build a double-digit lead.
The Big East has been trying to rebuild as a 12-school football conference since Syracuse and Pittsburgh announced they would be moving to the ACC and West Virginia announced it was leaving for the Big 12.
“Selfishly, we’re excited to be going to the Dallas/Fort Worth area,” Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship said. “I think it gives us an opportunity to engage our fan base and the timing couldn’t be better.”
Case Keenum threw for 457 yards and five touchdowns, Patrick Edwards had 181 yards receiving and four scores and No. 8 Houston earned a spot in the Conference USA championship game by beating Tulsa 48-16 on Friday.
The SMU defense kept Case Keenum and Houston’s prolific offense under control — at least as much as any team can control the high-scoring Cougars.
Navy plays at SMU on Saturday after finally ending its six-game losing streak.
J.J. McDermott threw for three touchdowns and Zach Line rushed for three scores to lead SMU to a 45-24 victory against Tulane on Saturday.
USM and SMU are two programs with talented teams, trying to get noticed on a national level in the obscurity of Conference USA.
