On May 14, 2013, Ennis Mayor Russell Thomas went to sleep with his phone on silent. He woke up around 12:30 a.m. on May 15. “A police officer knocked on my door and said, ‘Mr. Mayor, you need to come downtown. We’ve been hit by a tornado.’”
Everyone’s probably heard of the festival Fiesta de San Fermin, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. The event gets attention the world over. Now, a similar type of bull running event is headed to North Texas, but not everyone is excited about it.

The event is one of the largest Czech Festivals in the country, and not even the tornado that swept across North Texas last week will stop the 47th Annual National Polka Festival in Ennis this weekend.
Right now, the number stands at $250 million. According to the Insurance Council of Texas, that is the amount of insured damage caused by the multiple tornadoes that moved across North Texas on the May 15.
Authorities say residents who were missing in the wake of this week’s destructive tornadoes in North Texas have been found safe.
The deadly storm system that spurred some 12 North Texas tornadoes moved from west to east. The storm system that took lives in Granbury and caused devastating property damage in Cleburne eventually moved through the city of Ennis.
In Johnson County the tornado that touched down in Cleburne has been given a preliminary EF-3 rating. Weather investigators say the most significant damage was just east of Lake Pat Cleburne.
Officials with the National Weather Service (NWS) have determined the strength of several tornadoes that touched down across North Texas Wednesday night. As of Thursday afternoon NWS officials estimate that 12 tornadoes touched down.
Ten tornadoes touched down in several small communities in North Texas overnight, leaving at least six people dead, dozens injured and hundreds homeless. Emergency responders were still searching for missing people Thursday afternoon.
