The first black police chief of an East Texas city made infamous by a black man’s 1998 dragging death has settled his wrongful dismissal lawsuit. Jasper was made infamous by the dragging death of James Byrd Jr.
Jasper voters were being asked Tuesday whether three black city council members should be removed from office after they voted earlier this year to hire the first black police chief in the history of the East Texas town.
The red paint investigators sprayed along a nearly 3-mile stretch on Huff Creek Road to mark the grisly final moments of James Byrd Jr.’s life is gone, but scars remain. Lawrence Russell Brewer is set to be executed for Byrd’s death Wednesday.
