World War II veteran Melbert Hillert recently returned to Normandy with his grandson, John Jose, to share an emotional experience.
Last month, several World War II veterans who were part of D-Day got a chance to return to Normandy. Laura Leppert and Wings of Freedom were the driving force behind that journey.
Melbert Hillert was a member of the Army during the D-Day invasion. He returned to Normandy with his grandson in June.
In this report: There was a woman who traveled with our eight veterans back to Normandy, and she has a connection to WW II that these men had to see for themselves. Most had not met Peggy Harris before this trip, but now they’ll never forget her or her story.
In this report we narrow our focus to just one of our eight D-Day veterans, who returned to Normandy, France last week. Sixty-nine years to the day, Sgt. Major Robert Blatnik was able to walk the same stretch of sand that he and his men assaulted at 6:30am on June 6 in 1944. It was his first time coming back, and he told Doug Dunbar this trip made a memory that will stay with him until the day he dies.
Part of the week-long mission during the return to Normandy, France for eight north Texas hero’s from World War II, was to pay respects to the men they served with, who never made it home. On a chilly day, along the shores of Omaha Beach, they got that chance.
