In a world of computers, tablets and phones, reading a book by turning the pages might seem like a lost art. But there are still places where one can find excellent children’s books to foster and share the love of literary works.

The flagship store of Half Price Books has one of the most extensive children’s book collections in the state. Half Price is known for offering used books but also carries a huge array of new books for all age ranges and features story time and crafts every Sunday afternoon. Stroller/buggy books, board books, touch and feel, books with sound, picture books, spinner and shape books, beginning readers, “Little Miss and Mr.” series, “Curious George” books, “Dr. Seuss” books along with children’s Bibles, science/reference and historical books and fun books like Mad Libs, puzzle and maze books are part of the collection. Half Price Books devotes a wall to Newberry Medalists books that date back to the 1920s. Half Price Books’ Half Pint section features a private reading area for children.

The Book Carriage offers books for children in kindergarten through high school. The store participates in school book fairs and carries books that have been traditionally well received as well as incorporates newly published books. The shop hosts local author events and offers signed copies of several children’s books. Newly released picture books like Holt’s “Dinner with the Highbrows” is also featured. Bi-lingual story time is hosted on Wednesday mornings.

Froggies is a menagerie of all things fun. It is a toy store, a bookstore and a haven of retro coolness with its toy selection. It has tin robots and trains, Elvis, I Love Lucy, Betty Boop, Beatles and Marvel Comic Book tin lunch boxes along with new toys, candy and other plush items that pull you back into a simple times. It is a place where adults and children can both have fun. Froggies carries board books, chapter books and Little Golden Books including “Everything I Need To Know I Learned From A Little Golden Book” by Diane Muldrow.

This community bookstore offers used books at a reasonable price. The children’s collection features vintage books that are rare finds. It is easy for children and adults to get lost in a favorite book at Lucky Dog. As they say, “everything old is new again” when it comes to used books, and treasures found here will make the reader a very “lucky dog.”
