Barbecue (BBQ, Bar-B-Q, Barbeque) is not only a way of life in the South, it’s a religion. Some swear the only way to cook the meat for this ritual is over an open flame, or hot coals, or by a combination of heat and smoke. Others argue that the preparation of the ingredients is the key; wet rub versus dry rub – spicy or not too much. The beauty is truly in the taste buds of the beholder. But the best thing about BBQ, is that it can taste just as good coming from a hole-in-the-wall joint than it does coming from a 5 star restaurant.

You can’t beat the original Sonny Bryan’s located off of I-35E on Inwood Rd across from UT Southwestern Medical Center. They offer a variety of smoked meats including, beef, pork, sausage, and much more. Sit in the vintage school desks or outside on the covered patio which is an old metal car-port. The meat is smoked daily and is first-come first-served, until they run out…which they usually do. If you do require any sauce, it’s found in the small clear beer bottles on the counter – but don’t dare try and sneak off with one. Average price $9.00

Even though Peggy Sue BBQ opened in 1989 they carry on a legacy of BBQ from the same location. For over 40 years it was Howard & Peggy’s, then Peggy’s Beef Bar before closing in the late 1980’s. The sliced beef that comes with the full meal is cut from the lean flat portion of the brisket and is smoked to perfection. The same is to be said about the baby back ribs, the pork spare ribs and top quality poultry that they serve (chicken and turkey). They also offer veggies for those who find themselves lost.
