Theatre Three and its sister company Theatre Too were recently honored with TheaterJones’ Best of 2011 award. After 50 years, Artistic Director Jac Alder continues to push the boundaries of live theatre. “Avenue Q” is an uproarious Tony-winning musical. Imagine “Sesame Street” puppets for adults with catchy little songs like “It Sucks to be Me” and rebellious, politically-incorrect moments. Older teenagers will enjoy the show, but parents should use discretion since it covers adult subject matter. Located in the Quadrangle in uptown Dallas, Theatre Three is within walking distance to good restaurants and offers free covered parking.

Uptown Players returns to the historic Kalita Huymphrey’s Theater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, for a regional premiere of the off-Broadway hit “The Divine Sister,” by Charles Busch. Wholly outrageous, it is a wonderful comic satire of the Hollywood gems like “The Bells of St. Mary’s” and other sinfully-pious films of a certain age. Starring Coy Covington as Mother Superior, this madcap comedy is devilish fun for those 18 and up.

Performances: July 27 through July 29

This exciting Tony Award-winning musical about religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension explores the heart of man and the endurance of love against all odds. This is based on a true story of Jewish factory-owner Leo Frank who was wrongly convicted for the rape and murder of his thirteen-year-old employee Mary Phagan. Set in Atlanta, Georgia during 1913, the events following his trial and the revival of the defunct KKK led to the formation of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Written by Alfred Uhry with music and lyrics by Harold Prince, “Parade” was first produced on Broadway in 1998 and was nominated for nine Tony Awards. This play contains mature subject matter and is not suitable for all audiences.
