Q: Great car with a truly remarkable color! What can you tell us about it?
A: It’s a 2009 Scion XD Release Series, which is why it’s crazy green. The name of it is “electric wasabi green.” When I first saw it, I was like, “I hate wasabi!” They do a Release Series every year. It has an audio package and tires and a lighting package, all the bells and whistles. Each year has a certain color, and 2009 was this crazy green color.
Q: I see.
A: It’s funny. I didn’t really think I was the type of person they would market that car toward. I think they made something like 1,600 in the whole country. I was like, “Oh, that’s not me, but I like it. I’ll get it.” I swear I drove into my parking lot. This is when I lived downtown. There was another one sitting right there! Apparently I’m totally the type of person they market this toward. I even live in the place I’m supposed to live in.
Q: Wow! Scary.
A: I was shopping around to replace my little Ford Ranger pickup truck. I’m always carrying stuff around. I live out of my vehicles and I do a lot of sculpture, as well. I wanted something more fuel efficient. I needed something I could still haul stuff in. I realized I would have to get a station wagon or a hatchback or something. An SUV wouldn’t work because the gas mileage wasn’t going to be what I wanted it to be. I looked at the Toyota RAV-4 and the Volkswagen Golf, but the Scion was $10,000 less and I couldn’t see a big difference. I went with the Scion and made the money choice. I’ve always driven white vehicles, so I was going to get a white vehicle. I walked in and there was this crazy green car. It took me a week to decide if I was ready to be a bright green car person, and I just decided to do it!
Q: Just like that?
A: Every now and then I’ll see a Release Series around town and it will have racing stripes or upgraded exhaust, but not me, I drive the soccer mom version of the hip car.
Q: When did you get the car?
A: It’s a 2010, actually. It was one of the last of the Release Series.
Q: Have you ever had a brand new car before?
A: I haven’t. This is the first time I’ve been able to go pick out a car to be mine. I always had a truck, so I could move all my stuff back and forth from here to Los Angeles for grad school. This was the first time I was able to get a fun car. It could also be a little bit of the “I’m over 30, but I’m not ready to get an old lady car.” It’s a nice mix between practical and fun.
Q: That’s very responsible of you. This car still looks fun.
A: Yeah. I like it. All the time, people tell me something like, “I saw you at the grocery store! Well, I saw your car.” I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing yet!
