Food stamp application mistakes could cost the state millions.  The Federal Government fines the state 3.9 million dollars for making too many mistakes on food stamp applications but this was a time right after Hurricane Ike hit the upper Texas coast.  “We feel like that’s an extenuating circumstance that needs to be considered when the Federal Government looks at whether or not to assess a fine.”  Health and Human Services Commission Spokesman Jeff Wool says Louisiana was also fined after Hurricane Katrina and won its appeal of the fine.  That’s exactly what Texas will do, file an appeal with the Feds in the next 60 days.
