FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Southbound Interstate 35W at Risinger Road in south Fort Worth was reopened nearly four hours after a fiery three-vehicle wreck that killed one person.
At about 4:20 p.m., a spokesman said a diesel service truck crashed into a pickup, which then slammed into an 18-wheeler in front of it. The diesel truck and the pickup both caught on fire, trapping the pickup driver inside his cab.
A responding officer tried to rescue the man, but two further explosions prevented the officer from reaching him in time. The officer retreated and maintained a safe distance, prevent further injuries, a Fort Worth police spokesman said.
After the accident, three others declined to be transported to the hospital, MedStar officials at the scene said. No charges have been pressed.
Authorities had the fire out by 5:13 p.m., and I-35W southbound was closed until about 9 p.m.
