PALO PINTO COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – The wildfires burning near Possum Kingdom Lake are now 60-percent contained.

Officials have lifted evacuation orders for Gaines Bend and Sportsman’s World, but The Cliffs Resort, where some 40 homes were destroyed, is still closed.

While firefighters have been busy trying to put out flames since Tuesday, other parts of Possum Kingdom Lake are open and ready for business.

By Friday afternoon a few campers have already showed up on The Peninsula for the Labor Day weekend. Many lake visitors said it is much quieter than it has been in holidays past.

Some campgrounds are waving entry fees over the weekend, to encourage people to come out to the lake.

Despite the wildfires Catrina Mead and her family decided to make the trip to Palo Pinto County, all the way from Lubbock.

“We did hear about the fires and actually reconsidered our trip a few times before we actually got on the road,” Mead said. “We were out yesterday and there was quite a bit of smoke. The fires would come back through and there would be a lot of smoke.”

Roadblocks remain in place on Highway 16. Use of the road is restricted for residents only. Anyone caught driving around, trying to get a look at damage could be ticketed.
