DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – On Thursday Pitmasters from Oklahoma and Texas began cooking ribs. They rolled into downtown Dallas with their smokers, secret recipes and enthusiasm and began cooking pork ribs for Round One of the 2012 Texas Oklahoma Red River Barbecue Shootout.

Eight pitmasters, four from Oklahoma and four from Texas, are competing for finalist honors to represent their state in the People’s Choice competition and a chance at the $1,000 grand prize.

After tonight’s judging two winners, one from Oklahoma and one from Texas will be selected to go to the finals.

The OKLAHOMA PITMASTERS team is – Robby Corcoran with Burn Co. BBQ out of Tulsa, Russ Garrett with Coach’s from Oklahoma City, Terel McNac with Steve’s Ribs out of Edmond, and Bill Ritter with Mud Creek BBQ from Ringling, Oklahoma.

The TEXAS PITMASTERS team is – Cliff Payne from Cousin’s out of Fort Worth, Kelly Duncan with Big Daddy’s from Lavon, Lance Kirkpatrick with Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew from Austin, and Rev. Jeremiah McKenzie from Baby J’s BBQ & Fish out of Palestine, Texas.

A panel of food experts, sports industry members and community leaders will judge Thursday’s competition. The ultimate winner will be chosen by a People’s Vote of attendees who purchase a People’s Choice Rib Plate and cast a ballot.

All proceeds will benefit Kidd’s Kids – a charity that works on behalf of chronically ill children and their families.
