DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Cowboys safety and special teams player C.J. Spillman remains on the team as Grapevine Police look into an allegation he was involved in a sexual assault last month.
Spillman is entitled to due process according to Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, and he says he’s not commenting on the Grapevine police investigation. “Having said that we’ve been very clear to our team about the consequences there will be if there is a situation where charges or arrests are made for a crime,” he said.READ MORE: Day 2 Of The State Fair Of Texas Brings Visitors Fun, Football & Fried Food
The league has been playing defense on domestic abuse and child abuse. Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice videotaped striking the woman who is how his wife…the Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Petersen accused of whipping his 4-year-old. Both have been suspended. Should Spillman? “I think you have to be careful in accusations and allegations in this situations,” Garrett said.
Spillman will continue to work out and play while the investigation goes on. Police tell us the alleged sexual assault occurred at the team hotel, the Gaylord Texan, early on the morning of September 20 before the club left for a game in St. Louis.
“We don’t have any pending arrests planned right now,” according to Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling. “That may change. It just depends on how this investigation turns out.”
But celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred told CBS 11 News in an e-mail she is representing the complainant. “I have not confirmed who my client is or any facts except that she alleges she was raped. She is not doing interviews.”READ MORE: No Injuries Reported After Propane Tank Explosion At Texas Motor Speedway
Allred has been negotiating an interview for her client with the NFL. A league statement says, “We have been looking into this matter and will continue to do so.” The NFL says it is ready to meet with Allred, but no word on the Spillman himself. But the Cowboys won’t make changes, according to Garrett. “When there are charges and an arrest made in a crime, there are consequences in house and we can address those publicly if we need to.”
