The victim, described only as a 15-year-old female at Poteet High School, was just a few blocks away Wednesday morning when a man tried to lure her into his SUV by asking if she wanted a ride, according to Mesquite Police Lieutenant Brian Parrish.

“She couldn’t quite hear him and actually stepped forward to look in and she saw that he was exposing himself. At that point she became scared and quickly left the area,” said Parrish.

By Wednesday night the Mesquite ISD was sending a phone warning not just to Poteet parents, but also those in five other surrounding schools.

“Terrified me. Because there’s a lot of kids that walk to school ” said Janet Ansteth. She drives her second grader to and from nearly Austin Elementary every day. “And for somebody to be cruising the neighborhood like that — I see kids out all day long — it just terrifies me.”

Poteet senior, Diana Rodriguez didn’t know about the incident when CBS 11 News approached her. “I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think… I wouldn’t expect it here. So I was shocked.” Her sister, Yesenis Rodriguez was stunned as well. “She never walks home but what if there’s an emergency and she needs to? We wouldn’t be confident enough to let her walk home.”

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic male in his ’30s with a light beard and moustache. He was wearing red basketball shorts and driving a tan SUV, thought to be a Chevy Tahoe.

Police urge students to walk with a friend and be aware of strangers. Rodriguez has a suggestion of her own. “Ignore them, because if you try to say something you don’t know what they might do.”
