DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) – It might have been a holiday, but it was no day off for Alton Phillips III, who was actually cutting more heads of hair today than he would normally, and he wasn’t making any money on it either.
Bella Montgomery was there wanting to look her best. “I think this place is wonderful,” she told CBS 11 News.
A homeless woman who’s spent days sleeping on a couch up the street, she may be in line for an apartment tomorrow.
“I have a voucher and the apartment complex will be open tomorrow so, yes, they said I could move in.”
While she waited she snacked on nachos and pored over clothes provided by Cross Church Denton. “I’ve got some socks and everything and I’ve got some brand new tennis shoes.”
It’s one way Alton Phillips feels he can help out. “We’re so excited about what we see today,” he said during a trim.
Phillips teamed up with Cross Church Denton for food and warm clothes and a free haircut. “Growing up, this is something I couldn’t see in a million years, but knowing there are people out there that need some help and knowing I had some help growing up I felt like I wanted to give back to the community”
In another chair was Charles Renfro’s son, Jacob. Renfro is partially disabled from a traffic accident and can’t line up full-time work.
They live in an apartment now, but his family finds it tough to make ends meet. “There’s a lot of things we have to do without. Obviously the first things to go are the things you don’t have to do or at least not as often. So it’s actually been several months since we’ve gotten a haircut and this has been a real blessing.”
Cross Church’s lead pastor is Vincent Silmon. He sees a lot of people struggling to return to society. “They’ve fallen on hard times. They have somewhere to live but struggling with having food to eat, having some of the basic needs.”
Like for one day, at least, looking their best. Phillips plans another event in the summer for back-to-school. Once again, his haircuts will be free.
