DENTON COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – The Town of Little Elm thinks it’s too big – and we’re not talking population. To combat the issue, the city is asking residents there to get on the scale.
As cities across the country struggle with a growing obesity crisis, Little Elm also worries about becoming not so little. There are reminders all across town encouraging people to start the New Year off by taking the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge.
Little Elm resident Leslie Regan doesn’t just plan to take the 10-week program, but win it.
“I need to win it,” she said enthusiastically. “I want to come in here, and everyone knows and says, she’s the winner.”
The fitness challenge is for residents to get fit, lose weight, and become active. Among other things, participants are encouraged to work out, eat sensibly, and attend seminars on nutrition and fitness.
Goals will be personalized, and participants can win reward points along the way, but the real prize will be improved health and bragging rights as the community comes together to support the effort.
Libby Daftari is onboard. “It’s like a huge motivator to me as I drive into Little Elm I see the signs, “Mayor’s Fitness Challenge,” she said. “I’m like, ‘okay this is a great challenge for me to sign up for’ and hold me accountable to get started on my goals for this year.”
But for those who lack motivation, Leslie Regan says if she can do it just about anyone can. “I have multiple sclerosis, but it doesn’t stop me. It pushes me a little harder.”
No matter how much the competitive spirit may drive some taking the challenge, in the end it’s one large support group for anyone who wants to live healthier.
“You’ve got to want to do it for yourself,” Regan reassured. “You can’t say, ‘well I’m going to lose this for my kids; I’m going to lose this for my husband.’ You got to say, ‘I’m going to lose this for me.’”
Even if you don’t want to commit to the 10-week challenge, over the next few days, you can sign up for half-off memberships at the Little Elm Recreation
Center, and you don’t have to live in the town to take part.
The Little Elm Mayor’s Fitness Challenge begins Saturday, January 3 and runs until Saturday, March 14.
