DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Fresh off beating the defending champions at Moody Coliseum on Saturday night, the SMU Mustangs have jumped to No. 21 in the latest AP Poll.

The Mustangs jumped out to a big first-half lead in beating Connecticut 73-55 — pushing their record to 21-5 overall and 12-2 within the American Athletic Conference (1st place).

The Larry Brown-led Mustangs have four AAC games remaining before the conference tournament kicks off on March 12.

SMU is looking to make its first NCAA tournament since 1993 after narrowly missing in 2014. As a No. 1 seed, that team went on to lose in the NIT Finals to Minnesota.

The Big 12 is represented by five teams, with No. 8 Kansas leading the way.
