MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) – Authorities arrested an educator from the Mesquite Independent School District on Wednesday and charged him with having an improper relationship with a student.

Nigel Chandler is a teacher and coach at Mesquite High School. The 26-year-old educator has been accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old female student who attends the school. The incident is alleged to have occurred on Tuesday of last week.

The school district contacted the Mesquite Police Department on Friday after receiving a tip about the offense.

Investigators interviewed the victim and the suspect on Tuesday and issued an arrest warrant. Chandler surrendered to police at around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He bonded out of prison shortly afterward.

Laura Jobe with the Mesquite ISD confirmed that Chandler was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation. He was hired by the district in 2012 and teaches health and boys athletics.
