DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A few weeks ago, one of our producer’s here at CBS11 sent me an email. It read: “Wanna be cryogenically frozen? It’d only be for like 3 minutes.”
I’m usually up for a good challenge so I immediately said yes! When I learned the treatment called for me to walk into a cold chamber my heart started to race. I don’t do well in confined spaces.
When I found out temperatures would drop 245 degrees below zero I started to reconsider. But I had committed, and there was no turning back.
Less than a week later, when I arrived at CryoUSA in Dallas I had several questions about some of the beneficial claims I read online. It’s been used at spas in Europe since the 1990s. The reviews I read claimed it helps to energize those who try it. The same reviews also said athletes benefit from the quick recovery the treatment provides. And, one report, in New York Magazine even claimed one 3 minute treatment could burn as many as 800 calories. Experts say there is very little science to back this up but I was reassured it would not hurt me.
So I grabbed a robe along with some gloves, socks and slippers to keep my hands and feet from frostbite. Within 2 minutes I was ready to walk into what looked like a massive beer can.
I walked into the chamber and snapped the door shut behind me. It was snug inside. The robe came off, the clock was set to 3 minutes and it was go time. A young woman named Nancy walked me through the process. I was raised just enough to get my head out of the tube and make eye contact with the operator. She hit a button and suddenly the chamber started to fill up with a white cold vapor.
The first 30 seconds were easy. Nancy did a great job of keeping me distracted. Yes I was cold, but it wasn’t unbearable. Nowhere near as bad as the cold ice baths I had taken when I ran track in High School. By the end, it felt like I was outside, in the snow in my bathing suit.
Overall the experience was good. It gave me energy the rest of the day. I was also VERY hungry. That night I slept soundly, uninterrupted all night long. Because I have two toddlers! This was a treat!
