DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The brick facing of an outside wall suddenly collapsed at an East Dallas apartment complex Monday morning, taking hundreds of bricks with it.
Residents say they heard a big “crack” like a car hit the wall and suddenly a pile of bricks were in the driveway. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the crash shocked a lot of people.
It happened just before noon, according to neighbors, at a complex near Gaston and Munger. After the initial “crack,” they could hear windows breaking. Jackie Corona talked about what she heard and how she protected her children.
“We heard a really loud bang. It was…it seemed like a car hit the and glass shattered on both sides. Of course I ran to them when I heard it so, I went to get my kid,” she said.
Though workers were on the scene within a few minutes, the city has served a notice of violation to the owners. They’re required to remove the bricks and secure the outside windows with plywood, which is underway.
Dallas Code Enforcement says for the past two years there had been no violations reported at the complex. Now, windows must be boarded up and the outside secured, but residents can stay in their apartments tonight.
