KEMP, TX (CBSDFW.COM) – Plano West High School football standout and UCLA recruit Sontowye (“Soso”) Jamabo was arrested for evading arrest.

Kemp Police Chief Robert Walker said around 7:20 pm Saturday Jamabo, driving a pick-up truck, sped past one of his officer as he exited state highway 175 in Kaufman County.

When the officer tried to pull the 18-year-old over, according to the police chief, he failed to stop and “having total disregard of public safety the driver continued southbound on state highway 274 passing vehicles in the turning lane and swerving.”

Chief Walker said the pursuit lasted around five minutes during which occupants began throwing objects out the windows.

Jamabo eventually pulled over and exited the truck as instructed by the police officer.

The three other teenagers inside the pick-up were cited and released by police.

Jamabo was booked into the Kaufman county jail for evading arrest. His posted a $7,500 bond Sunday afternoon.

“We had no idea who the suspect was,” said Walker. “We had no idea. My officer was doing his job in my opinion.”

In February, as one of the top recruits in the country, Jamabo announced on national television he was signing with UCLA.

A spokesperson for the university said the school is aware of the arrest but declined further comment.

CBS 11 News reached out to the Jamabo family. His father declined to comment.
