An Ellis County judge gave 384 cruelly treated roosters and hens to the SPCA of Texas. They’ll soon be evaluated and  put up for adoption on a case by case basis.

Stephanie knight with the SPCA says they came from a March 29th raid in Ellis County where 30 people were detained. There was another ring in Dallas county where 37 people were detained.

The SPCA of Texas removed the animals and transported them to a secured, undisclosed location, where they were cared for until the custody hearings.

Cockfighting is a crime in all 50 states, including Texas, where it is a felony. It’s punishable by up to two years in a state jail and/or up to a $10,000 fine.

In Texas, it is a Class C Misdemeanor to be a spectator at a cock fight.

Federal law also prohibits any interstate or foreign transport of fighting animals.
