ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) – Authorities in Rockwall County located an escaped prisoner on Wednesday morning and have taken him back into custody. The prisoner has been identified as 18-year-old Jose-Maria Pedraza-Cervantes. He got away from police at around 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He was found again about three hours later.
There are three armed deputies watching Cervantes now.
Officials stated that the man was being checked out at Lakepointe Medical Center in Rowlett, located in the 6800 block of Scenic Drive near Lakeview Parkway. But he jumped out of a third-floor room’s window, landed on a lower roof area, and then swung down to the ground level and ran away.
Pedraza-Cervantes was being watched by two detention officers, but one had stepped away to use the restroom at the time of the escape. Pedraza-Cervantes was wearing handcuffs and shackles on his ankles. When he started trying to remove the handcuffs, the officer called for help and got into a tussle with the inmate.
“He was shackled,” says Rockwall County Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Welch. “At some point he was able to escape from the shackles, don’t know how yet, that will be investigated.”
The officer received minor injuries during that confrontation, and had to be treated at the hospital.
Pedraza-Cervantes broke the window with his head before jumping out.
Authorities added that Pedraza-Cervantes is not a violent offender. He was in jail on felony drug charges with a bond of more than $500,000.
For three hours, deputies, police and SWAT officers followed a trail of blood. They found Cervantes injured and unconscious near I-30 and Dalrock Road in Rowlett, three miles from the hospital
Meanwhile, four area school campuses were locked down Wednesday morning: Giddens-Steadham Elementary School, Pearson Elementary School, Herfurth Elementary School and Schrade Middle School — all in the Garland Independent School District. Only students and staff members were allowed inside while the suspect search was conducted, but that lockdown has since been lifted.
