With a little down time before training camps open this weekend, four players took advantage of a break in their schedules to tie the knot.
The most talked about wedding of the three occurred Friday in Arizona where Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson exchanged vows. The two WNBA All-Stars were arrested April 22 on suspicion of assault after a fight with each other in a home they recently purchased. Griner entered into a diversion agreement, where she plead guilty to disorderly conduct and will attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling. All charges will be dismissed if she completes her counseling. Johnson also agreed to counseling.
The league is still investigating the fight.
Swin Cash was married May 3 in Atlanta to longtime boyfriend Steve Canal in front of a large WNBA contingent that included Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and league president Laurel J. Richie.
Finally, Minnesota Lynx star Seimone Augustus married LaTaya Varner in Hawaii on Saturday. Augustus had attended the U.S. national team training camp in Las Vegas earlier in the week. Even with her pending nuptials, there was no doubt she’d be at training camp.
“You can’t miss the opportunity to be part of the national team,” Augustus said. “Nothing’s guaranteed. You got to make sure you get your spot.”READ MORE: Customs Officers Seize Narcotics At Texas-Mexico Border Worth $1.8M+ Hidden In Tires, Ice Chests
UConn coach Geno Auriemma closed the three-day camp giving Augustus a few tips on how to dance at her wedding while the rest of the Olympic hopefuls cheered them on.
“That was the most embarrassing moment ever,” a smiling Augustus said. “It was really cool. They were sending me off with well wishes to my wedding.”
Augustus was also given a shirt that said “Dancing with a Star.” She said she was only going to have about 15 guests at the wedding and was happy to keep her nuptials mostly private.
“It’s a good thing for me, I’m a laid-back person. Never one for the lights. Brittney is who she is, of course she’s going to draw a lot of attention. When she came out and said she was going to get married you knew it was going to be a big deal.”
Augustus and Varner have been together for eight years and got engaged in 2010. They’ve used their celebrity status to help fight for same-sex marriage in Minnesota. It was legalized in 2013.
“We found a little piece of time to get it done between the international season and the WNBA season,” Augustus said. “They can have the spotlight. We prefer to have the quiet simple wedding as opposed to TV cameras.”MORE NEWS: Man Wanted In Dallas For Child Sexual Assault Charges, Jose Gerardo Ibarra Arrested At U.S.-Mexico Border
