CORINTH (CBSDFW.COM) – The Corinth man who says he rescued a bear cub from a trap on his ranch last week in Oklahoma says he never intended the animal to be a pet.

Greg Gideo says he was nursing the cub back to health.  He named it, Yogi and kept it in a large cage but Thursday it got out and caught neighbors by surprise.

Gideo says Yogi escaped after breakfast through a corner of the cage.  He shared video of Yogi from days before, rummaging through his refrigerator looking for a chocolate bar.

“I wanted to take care of him,” says Gideo.

He’d had Yogi since Sunday and says he was going to head back to Oklahoma this weekend to try to reunite him with his mother bear.  But instead, Yogi is now at an animal sanctuary in Pilot Point and Gideo is in trouble with the law for having the wild animal at his house.

“I felt responsible. I didn’t want nothing to happen to him. I brought him back to Texas, maybe I shouldn’t have but I did,” says Gideo. “Would I do it again? Absolutely.”

He says he will pay any fine given to him for having the bear cub and says he also intends to donate money to the sanctuary caring for Yogi.
