DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -The six shell casings on Bishop Avenue mark the area where Dallas police say they had a run-in with a wanted sex offender.

UPDATE:  The suspect involved in the officer involved shooting from earlier Tuesday is 59-year-old Joe Cody.

Armed sex offender Joe Cody was shot and killed by Dallas Police.

Arthur Lucero was working up the street around 1:30pm Tuesday, the time of shooting. “I heard sirens and that’s what made me turn around. The officers in the street with their guns drawn and then when the single shot happened, officers returned fire and then it was done.”

But police say they’re still investigating whether the 59 year old suspect fired the handgun he was holding.

Assistant Police Chief Randy Blakenbaker says, “As officers approached the suspect, he produced and displayed a handgun the officers gave verbal commands to drop the gun. The suspect didn’t comply forcing officers to discharge their weapons.”

Blakenbaker says four officers fired on the suspect. None of them was injured.

Police say the sex offender was wanted on a parole violation for a sex-related crime.

The assistant chief says they received an anonymous tip from Dallas Crimestoppers about the suspect, who they considered potentially dangerous.

Police haven’t identified him because they haven’t notified next of kin yet.

For nearby resident Andres Sandoval, the scene is unsettling. “That’s kind of crazy. I was never expecting and see something like his near a hospital here.”
