DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The first thing you’re told when the temperatures become oppressive is to stay indoors, but for some a cool treat in the warm sunshine is hard to resist. Both man and beast are searching high and low for heat relief.

Snow Cones are selling like “hotcakes” at the Grove on Harwood. But if these are the dog days of summer, then you and your dog aren’t going to like this heat… that is, unless you go with Plan B.

Leo the Lab-Boxer mix didn’t let a little August heat wave stop him or his buddies from making a few waves of their own. His owner, Emily Johnson, soaked up the heat relief pet attraction at Dallas’ Dog Park at White Rock Lake.

“They can’t be cooped up inside all day, they’ll go crazy,” she said. “So, this is the best option — taking them to the lake.”

People with pets weren’t the only ones taking the plunge. If you can’t beat the heat, why not soak up some summer fun.

Twins Billy and Trixie Bryan joined the kiddie crowd at the Lake Highlands Recreation Center spray park. Their mom and the rest of the adults refused to stay inside.

Billy explained it quite simply. “Well we’re out here because, mostly because it’s just really hot. And it’s Texas!”

Trixie Bryan, 11, offered some advice to the young and old. “I’d say if you’re gonna be outside, you should always be in the water.”

Some North Texans preferred the climate controlled indoors. Terri Rice and her youngsters are public library regulars.

“It’s nice, cool and comfortable,” she said, adding that her children “… enjoy reading.”

Averil Coleman and crew like books too, but they also needed to check out something they don’t have at home right now.

Coleman wearily explained, “The a/c has been out for four days.”

So if necessity is the mother of invention, North Texans everywhere are inventing ways to enjoy or avoid the triple-digit heat.
