MELISSA (CBSDFW.COM) – Another Melissa High School employee is facing sex assault charges, after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
Arrest warrants were issued for Darrell Glenn Whitten, on charges including Indecency with a Child and Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student. Whitten was teacher at Melissa High, but he’s no longer employed by the school district.
The 50-year-old turned himself in at the Collin County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning. His bond was set at more than $22,000, which he posted and was released within hours.
Earlier this week, the Melissa High School band director, Michael Eugene Reddell, was arrested and charged with sexual assault for accusations that he also had an improper relationship with a student. Reddell resigned after being charged, officials with the school district said he cited “personal issues”.
After Whitten was taken into custody, Melissa ISD Superintendent Keith Murphy issued the following statement:
“It is a tough day in Melissa, Texas. My heart aches, and we are all saddened and shocked to learn of the arrest of former Melissa High School employee Glen Whitten.
The internal investigations involving former Band Director Michael Reddell and former teacher Glen Whitten are now closed and have been handed off to local authorities.
We have been as open and honest with the public about the events of the last four days as we can be during an ongoing personnel investigation.
First and foremost, we are in the business of taking care of our children; our primary objective is the safety of all students. We will do all that is necessary to continue to ensure the trust of our community going forward.
Starting on Monday, August 24, 2015, trained counselors and clergy will be available on the high school campus, for both students and staff members, to provide support during this difficult time.”
Reddell had previously served as assistant band director at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Worley Middle School, both in the Mansfield Independent School District.
Melissa ISD Chief of Police Kelly Davidson released this statement following the investigations:
“Exhaustive investigations by Melissa ISD Police, Collin County Child Abuse Task Force, and other partnering agencies have resulted in the arrests of two former teachers, Michael Reddell and Glen Whitten. The arrests allege an improper student-teacher relationship during the 2014-15 school year. It is important for our community to know that school officials have removed all obstacles, empowering police to act swiftly. What was an internal investigation is now being handled by local officials. The Melissa ISD family will move forward in supporting those involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone.”
Officials have said that over the course of the Redell investigation, they obtained information that led to the arrest of Whitten. However, they were reluctant to describe the cases as “related,” because there is nothing to suggest the two suspects conspired together.
Administrators say trained counselors and clergy will be at the high school when classes resume on Monday.
Investigators and school officials have been tight-lipped about details in the two arrests, but we are learning new information from court documents that describe a relationship that spanned months.
Sheriff’s deputies confirm that the victim is the same in both cases. A probable cause affidavit describes a female student being kissed by Whitten on multiple occasions until she finally told him, no.
The documents go on to show the victim told Whitten about another teacher’s inappropriate behavior toward her and told him that she was depressed and suicidal, details investigators say Whitten failed to report.
The affidavit also describes the victim telling Whitten that if she were to ever go missing, he should contact police. Whitten also faces a charge of failure to report child abuse.
