DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Postal officials announced Wednesday progress is being made to identify, recover and process parcels impacted by a mechanical fire last Friday night at the Dallas Network Distribution Center at 2400 DFW Turnpike.

Approximately .007% of 4.5 million pieces of mail, some 1,500 parcels, that were processed last Friday and were damaged by the fire are now being recovered and delivered as promptly as possible.

No advertising letters or flats were affected. The parcels that were involved in the fire were mainly standard post packages. A smaller number of packages, approximately 87 parcels, were destroyed by the fire. If identifiable addresses can be found, these packages will be sent on to the recipients.

Built in 1975, with almost 600,000 square feet on 75 acres, the Dallas NDC operates 24-hours-a-day and is staffed by 1,000 postal employees.

When the fire ignited, it was contained to three of 522 overhead conveyor belts in the plant. We are grateful for the quick response by the Dallas Fire Department, which helped to mitigate any extended damage to the mail, equipment or facility.

Every effort is now being made to deliver the impacted parcels. Customers who believe their mail may have been affected can contact postal officials for assistance by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS or 972-393-6755.

USPS says it apologizes to customers for this unfortunate incident.
